Here’s How You Can Detox After The Festival Indulgence

By Avni Kaul

Diwali bingeing leaves most of us with severe guilt pangs. It is important to detox your Body after celebrating Diwali with all that festive fervour. It is not always possible during the festivity to say no to good food loaded with fats, sugar, carbohydrates and dry fruits during the festival season. This indulgence mostly has it effects a few days after when you are plagued with indigestion, bloating or heaviness. And mind you, these are just symptoms of the havoc that our digestive system is going through.

While it is fine and sometimes unavoidable to indulge every now and then, we must also take care to try and undo the damage done during days of festive bingeing. Try and incorporate a few foods and methods into your daily lifestyle to rid your body of the extra calories. These foods/ drinks/ ingredients allow you to detox without the punishing regime of a diet involving starvation. What’s more, the nutrients in the following foods/ drinks/ ingredients also help the body recover faster and stronger.

Lemon Water: Replace Your Morning Bed Tea With This Concoction

Lemon water is perhaps the easiest and most fuss free way to flush out the toxins from the body. It encourages the liver to produce bile which helps in digestion and detoxification. Sipping lukewarm boiled water all through the day also purifies the body. The most ideal thing to do would be to squeeze the juice of a lemon in a glass of hot water and sip it right after every Meal. In fact, if you have the tenacity, replace your morning bed tea with this concoction. You will see the difference in just a week if you do this daily.

Green Tea: Get Replenished And Increase Metabolism

Everyone know green tea is great, but not many know exactly why. Well, this gorgeous hued beverage is rich in antioxidants which keeps you healthy and the liver active. The rich foods that you have eaten during Diwali depletes the water content in the body which gets replenished when you drink green tea. It also increases the metabolism which in turn burns body fat.

These drinks include warm water with added ajwain, jeera, fenugreek seeds, lemon slices, tulsi or neem leaves. Coconut water is another very good natural option.

Eat Light: But Don’t Skip Meals

For at least one meal in a day, opt to eat light. This does not mean starve. But I would definitely recommend you eliminate carbohydrates (potato, wheat, rice, breads) completely from at least one meal during the day. I would strongly suggest this meal be dinner as the undigested food will not get stored as fat in the body. Instead, have a vegetable soup with lots of different vegetables of your choice. This provides lots of antioxidants and potassium which eliminate toxins from the body. Replacing one meal with only raw fruits and vegetables is also a great idea as this pumps your body with vitamins , minerals, antioxidants and fibers, all of which together keep the body healthy while removing the toxins lining the intestinal walls. Having steamed sprouts boosts immunity and purify blood. Corrosion of tissues is prevented by the antioxidants present in them, The glow in the skin and hair is due to Omega-3 fats in them. They restore hormonal balance in the body and also hydrate it. In addition to this, quinoa, couscous and even a bowl of khichdi once in a while are all easily digestible, nutritious, filling and light. They are gluten-free and strengthen the system.

Most importantly, don’t skip meals. Instead have smaller light meals at regular intervals.

Detoxifying should not be taken as a punishment. Instead, it can be made interesting by including different meal options like spinach, tomatoes, cucumber, apples, broccoli etc along with other essential foods. Do not starve yourself at any given time or give up everything that you love eating. Eating sensibly along with regular exercise, plenty of water and sufficient rest should do the trick of bringing you back to your normal weight and health.
