Varieties of Modern Indian Coins That Can Enhance Your Collection

Most collectors are interested in collecting ancient and medieval India coins. However, there are many varieties of modern Indian coins as well that will add a new dimension to your collection. Let’s take a look at the main categories and a few examples of coins of modern India today.

Anna Series
Modern coins of India can be mainly categorised into two groups namely, Anna series and republic of India decimal coinage series. The Anna series modern India coins bore various denominations like 1 Anna, 1 Pice, 1/2 Anna, 1/2 Rupee, 1/4 Rupee, 2 Annas and Rupee. They were struck on different metals like Bronze, Copper-Nickel and Nickel. They come in three shapes as well like Round, Scalloped and Square. These modern coins of India were struck at three mints namely Bombay, Calcutta and Hyderabad.

1/2 Anna Coin

This 1/2 Anna copper-nickel coin was square in shape and was struck by Government of India at Bombay Mint in the year 1950. The 2.86 grams coin featured the text GOVERNMENT OF INDIA around National Emblem and a Star below the emblem on the obverse. The reverse featured the denomination in words in English as well as Hindi around Zebu the Bull while the year was mentioned below.

Decimal Coinage
Modern coins from the decimal coinage series were issued in various denominations like 1 Naya paisa, 1 Paisa, 10 Naye Paise, 10 Paise, 10 Rupees, 2 Naye paise, 2 Paise, 2 Rupees, 20 Paise, 25 Naye Paise, 25 Paise, 3 Paise, 5 Naye paise, 5 Paise, 5 Rupees, 50 Naye Paise, 50 Paise and Rupee. They were issued in various metals and compositions like Aluminium, Aluminium bronze, Aluminium- Bronze, Bimetalic, Brass, Brass Plated Steel, Bronze, Copper-Nickel, Copper-Nickel Clad Copper, Nickel, Nickel – Brass, Nickel Plated Steel, Nickel-Brass, Silver and Stainless Steel. Apart from the standards shapes from Anna series, some of these modern Indian coins were Hexagonal in shape as well. These Modern Coins of India were struck at numerous mints like Heaton, Hyderabad, Calcutta, London, Madras, Mexico, Moscow, Bombay, Noida, Ottawa, South Africa, Seoul, Slovakia and Taegu.
