If you have been on social media in the last twenty-four hours, then it’s hard to miss the absolute thrashing Fergie has received for her rendition of the National Anthem at the NBA All-Star Game.

It was a special kind of awful, and the most cringeworthy thing about it is that Fergie thought she completely killed it.

Being that it’s President’s Day, I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about another poor National Anthem performance that took place twenty years ago.WrestleMania 14 emanated from the Fleet Center (TD Garden) in Boston, MA. My friends and I were sitting in the nosebleed section, awaiting the main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels.

The show opened with the DX band, lead by frontman Chris Warren, performing the National Anthem. Now, this is customary at every WrestleMania, however, this was…different.

Howard Finkel’s distinguished voice introduced “the alternative, new wave version, of the themes, America the beautiful and our National Anthem.”

Two minutes and twenty seconds of audible hell was jeered by all 19,028 in attendance. Jim Ross did his best to save the segment when it was over stating “Only in the U.S.A. and the WWF, can there be this type of freedom of expression.”

The performance was so bad WWF completely omitted it from the official home video release of WrestleMania 14. Weirdly, reports surfaced that Vince McMahon loved the unorthodox take on the song.
