The 17th of April 2017 would turn out to be a night that many Tuks students will remember forever. Tuks Rugby team knocked Maties out the park, beating them 28-21 to claim the Varsity Cup title and their own Gizelle Venske claimed the title as Miss Varsity Cup 2017!

Gizelle Venske is a 19 year old B.com Accounting Science student at the University of Pretoria.
She believes that ” If you want to achieve something that you’ve never achieved before, you have to do something that you’ve never done.” Gizelle certainly did live up to those words and achieved something great.
We asked her some questions to get to know her a bit better.

– Why did you enter in the Miss Varsity Cup competition?
“Miss Varsity Cup is the opportunity not only to challenge myself and to grow as a person, but to inspire our generation.”
– What advice can you give to the younger ladies out there who also would like to participate in pageants?
“This is a great way of building your confidence and stepping outside your comfort zone. But before you enter any pageant you have to ask yourself why you are doing it. You must remember that you are opening yourself up to criticism therefore always keep in mind that your worth is not determined by the way you look or people’s opinions, but by your identity as a child of God.”

– What would you like to achieve as Miss Varsity Cup in the next 12 months?
“I don’t want to see what I can get from being Miss Varsity Cup as it is not about seeking my self-interests, but what I can contribute to the competition and how I can make a difference. I want to make the public more aware of the purpose behind the Varsity Cup competition by emphasising and embracing the “Rocking in Pink” and “Keep the aggro on the field” initiative. If the public have a better understanding and more knowledge of the charity campaign, I will be able to get more people involved in this project. Furthermore, I will strive to be the best ambassador I can be for Varsity Cup and one that all my peers can relate and look up to.”

-Do you see yourself participating in other pageants in the future, like Miss SA?
“This is a question that I’ve been asked a lot lately… Participating in Miss South Africa is definitely in the back of my mind. Before I enter such a life changing experience, I must be sure of what I want to achieve, but for the next two years I am going to focus on my studies to get my degree in the process of becoming a CA.”
– What was the best part of the journey to becoming Miss Varsity Cup?
“Stepping onto the field on Monday evening, standing in front of 11 000 spectators, gave me goosebumps. Even before the crowning took place, I realised how blessed I am to be able to experience that. It was one of those moments that you only get to experience once in your life but one that you will never forget.”

“Being Miss Varsity Cup opens a lot of doors for you…I got the chance to be interviewed live on Super Sport and I also met Prof De la Rey (Vice Chancellor of TUKS), Franscois Pienaar(old springbok captain) as well as Demi-Leigh (Miss SA) just to mention a few.”

Last Words
“The woman who follows the crowd is likely to go no further than the crowd, but the woman who follows her own footsteps is likely to find herself in places no one else has ever been. This is my motto for the year and I believe that Miss Varsity Cup provides me with the perfect platform to pursue my dreams.”
