Paintings by artist Sarah Slappey. Exploring subtly horrifying worlds of lushly contorted appendages, the lightness and delicacy of Slappey’s work is consistently offset by her own dark sense of humour. As she herself describes:
“Paradoxes within both the natural and human world are my main concern: softness is counterbalanced with aggression, comfort with vulnerability, banal with the uncanny, and masculine with feminine. I often reduce the figure down to only hands, feet, and limbs; it is unclear if they are attached to anyone at all. Beings within my work both caress and torment one another, and the paintings border on a razor-thin edge between sweet and sinister.”
