It’s been a year since I started my final major project. So I thought it’s about time I shared it with you!

This was by far my favourite University project as I was allowed to create the brief myself, meaning, I could completely lead the project! My first task was to find an interior space to work with. I really wanted to find an unusual building with an interesting shaped space, so I was able to challenge myself and push my design boundaries.

I found the perfect building right in my hometown. The building was ‘Royal View’ in Crest Nicholson’s ‘Bath Riverside’ development. Nicknamed ‘The wedding cake’, the building features a series of tiers sitting on top of each other and beautiful curved walls.

The Concept:

My first step was to create a concept for the interior. As the apartments were going to be on the market for £400,000+, I really wanted to create a luxurious feel. What’s more luxurious than Art Deco? The Roaring 20s were filled with brass, marble and soft velvets, which would be perfect for this setting. After browsing on Pinterest for Deco inspiration, I settled on a colour palette of dark blue, pale pink and gold.

Another strong element of my concept is curves. As the exterior of the building and my interior space featured soft, curves walls, I though the furniture shapes should reflect this. A lot of Bath’s architecture contains curves and arches too, so I wanted to bring that into the interior space as well.

The Floorplan:

As you can see, the space I worked with was very interesting! It features a big open plan area for the kitchen, dining rom and living room. And the master bedroom features it’s own dressing area behind a partition wall.

Due to the timescale of the project, I didn’t want to design all 8 rooms, so, I decided to do the kitchen, dining area, living room, master bedroom, bathroom and dressing room.

The Kitchen:

I decided to use blue kitchen units will brass accents to warm up the feel of the room. The marble fish scale shaped tiles echo the Art Deco style and the velvet bar stools add a touch of glamour.

I created a bespoke kitchen unit which joins to the dining table, you get a better view of this on the floorlpan. I did this to create flow between the two areas as it is an open plan space.

The flooring in this space is polished concrete which gives a subtle reflection. Again, if you look at the floor plan above, you can see that the concrete floor curves around the dining table to echo the curve of the balcony.

The Dining area:

I kept the style of the dining area in keeping with the kitchen to give a coherent look. So, the marble, brass and velvet make another appearance.

I wanted to make the wall behind the dining table a feature, but I didn’t want to add colour as it would be too busy. Instead, I went for a 3D textured wall with subtle curved shapes. I then used spotlights above to highlight the curves and create movement.

I put a small bench seat within the kitchen unit as it would be a great spot to chill out with a book and take in the beautiful view out the window.

The Living Room:

It was difficult to create a good layout for the lounge due to the curved wall and the patio doors. But, I thin I managed to find one that worked.

I created a shelf within the wall behind the sofa to display quirky pieces and artwork. The shelving features a pale pink backdrop and LED strip lighting above to illuminate the objects.

For the sofa and chair, I really wanted velvet to be the focus in order to continue the luxury feel. The ‘Margot’ armchair from Made.com looks really at home in this scheme due to the beautiful curved back and brass dipped legs.

There is also a polished concrete TV media unit which doubles up as a fireplace. The bit I love about this unit is that the TV can be turned to face the dining table too. So, you can easily watch a show while eating your tea!

The Bathroom:

The bathroom was difficult as it didn’t have any windows, so there was no natural light. I decided to create a concealed light in the shape of a rounded rectangle, which would spread the light out evenly.

The tiles were the focus of this room. Because of this, I wanted everything else to be block colours. The free standing bath is definitely the stand out piece in this room as it screams elegance.

The Master Bedroom:

This room really allowed me to be creative. I really wanted to create a statement with this room.

After researching show rooms, I noticed that textured wallpapers are really popular. I chose this foggy forest wall mural as it creates a subtle textured look, without being too obvious. Headboards are often very bold and experimental within show homes, so I decided to use this brass Art Deco screen with frosted glass panels.

I found the room was looking very dark, so I added a few soft pink accents to brighten it up. I absolutely love the tufted pink bench at the bottom of the bed.

The Dressing Room:

I found the dressing room really fun as I’d never designed one before. The only challenge was how tiny the space was! To overcome this, I used mirrored doors on the wardrobe to bounce the light around and create the illusion of more space.

I really wanted to create a pretty, feminine space so I toned down the blue to make it softer. I used a Terrazzo print wall mural (which is really on trend this year by the way!), marble and soft pink velvet to bring the feminine look together.

This was a great project for me as it allowed me to really push myself and create things I never would’ve thought of before. What do you think? Would you live in this apartment?
