Tips for Making Your Home YOUnique

Our homes are our sanctuaries. They are the place we retire to after a long day at work, the abode in which we know we can sit back, relax, and forget about the troubles of the world. They are the place where we entertain guests, throw parties, and create memories. They are where we long for when away for too long.

Everybody’s home is different. When first moving in, it is a blank canvas, waiting for our ideas and dreams to be splashed on walls, arranged to Suit our style, and designed so that every person who walks through that door knows where they are.

DON’T HIDE YOUR PASSIONS

Some people will move their possessions from their old home, packed up in boxes labelled ‘Things’ or something equally vague, and then hide them away in the loft to be forgotten. But what is in these boxes? All your comic books from your youth, those mysterious relics purchased from some far-off country that remind you of all those times before life got in the way.

But these are the sorts of things that you want to show off, even if you don’t think so. Consider walking around your home and every day being reminded of incredible memories that are brought up whenever you look at something from a long time ago. Sure, you want to avoid excess clutter, but with some smart organisation, there is no limit to discovering unique ways that show off your history and provide some interesting conversation starters.

With all of this opportunity for originality, there are still too many houses that look alike. The same Furniture, the same decor, the same frames and posters and artwork and while they look nice, a lot of the time it isn’t you.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE A BIT WEIRD

Too often, new homeowners or renters are too concerned about what suits the house, as opposed to what suits them. If you’re someone with more of a free attitude towards life, do you really want to fill your home with the same old boring furniture that you’ve seen around everyone else’s house for the past five years? Probably not.

Thankfully, while they may not be the cheapest of home additions, the chance to show off your personality through your furniture has never been easier. Retailers, such as Cuckooland’s luxury furniture collection, offer different and exciting furniture for when you want to make your mark on your home.

Of course, this runs the risk of people seeing this furniture and being amazed and asking where you got it from, but for a little bit of individuality at first, it’s a risk you should be willing to take.

Furthermore, the type of furniture you choose to fill your home with will also add to the sort of atmosphere you are trying to cultivate within your home.

DEDICATED ROOMS

Whatever you enjoy doing: writing, reading, drawing, gaming, knitting, sewing, painting, juggling, exercising, etc., etc., etc. If you have the space to dedicate a room in your house to doing something you love, then there’s no reason not to do it.

Not only will you have a special place that will (hopefully) be filled with some creative or calming energy away from the distractions of the rest of the house, you will also avoid wasting time in front of the TV but not paying attention. Or, even, one of those recent psychological phenomena where you alternate from screen to screen to fill even the smallest of lulls in entertainment.

Dedicating a room to what you love to do also helps if you have little space around the rest of the house. Too many people end up cluttering one room with a bunch of random stuff that becomes messy quickly and whenever it comes to moving out, can be an intimidating task to clear out and decide what must go.

You are your own person, and you want to be able to show that off whenever you get the chance. All week you are probably dressed how the office wants you to wear. But your home is the place where you can honesty be yourself, without judgement.

Take a look at this creative craft room:

Expressing yourself is so much more than just the way you talk and what you do, there is a myriad of ways to show off what lies beneath, and it doesn’t just end with how you present yourself to the world. Some of the most interesting and welcoming homes in the world are those that don’t care about what others think and go straight ahead and fill it with items and furniture that represent who the people are. If you can’t show off who you are at home, where can you?
