Felix Raspall + Carlos Banon’s 3D-Printed-Mesh System Displayed at Singapore’s iLight Marina Bay Festival

The iLight Marina Bay Festival in Singapore has produced many special designs and applications. Among the designs, the most prominent work was the mesh system manufactured by 3D printer technology led by Professor Felix Raspall and Carlos Banon of the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). The application was exposured the work of the University on the topic of ‘the ongoing investigation on demonstrating the use of 3D printing for functional, full-scale architectural components’ for a long time. The resulting design consists of a 3D Tetrahedral structure measuring 10 m x 6 m x 3 m.

Design of the mesh system contains more than 50,000 LED pixels that can be individually controlled. In addition, with the help of three ultrasonic sensors concealed in the structure, dynamic light shows are produced in different scenarios according to presence of visitors. The illuminated mesh system with the Tetrahedral look prepared for the festival revealed very stylish images. In this context, the design which was produced with completely new generation 3D printing technology and the illumination hidden in the fascinating image of the structure was welcomed with the interest of participants who attended the festival.

The project was developed by the multidisciplinary team led by architecture professors Felix Raspall and Carlos Banon, engineering professor Mohan Elara and postdoctoral researcher Felix Amtsberg from SUTD, and light designer Manuel Garrido.
