The Kindling Trust have been involved in setting up a range of projects related to sustainable farming including a Farm Start project, Veg Box people, Manchester Veg people, a land army and a social prescribing research project based at an urban horticulture hub that joins up inclusive community gardening with commercial organic food production.

Both talks are free and open to all. See below for details of what each talk will cover

More than medicine: social prescribing, food growing and healthy cooking

At Warehouse 8, Guildhall Road, HU1 1HJ , 2pm –4pm on Tue 27 February
In spring 2017, Kindling set up an innovative social prescribing pilot on the outskirts of Stockport on a one and a half acrefood growing site called Woodbank nursery, previously a council plant nursery run by the council parks department and now home to an urban horticulture hub which includes a commercial market garden,  Farmstart training programme and a training for beekeepers.

In 2017 the site is also home to an innovative pilot scheme, working with Stockport GP’s to test out the effectiveness of prescribing more than just medicine. Kindling are helping local doctors trial ‘social prescribing’ – referring patients for healthy veg, cookery classes and gentle exercise in the form of gardening, instead of relying solely on medicine – in the hope that this might be a more effective way to alleviate some mild to moderate health conditions.

It feels like a given to all of us that gardening, hanging out with other people and eating fresh food is good for you, but this pilot is aiming to prove it and put it on record. Kindling are testing its impact on a range of wellbeing indicators – blood tests before and at the end of the programme will establish whether there’s been an improvement in blood sugar and cholesterol levels, whilst the rather academically named Warwick-Edingburgh Mental Well-Being Survey (or WEWMBS for short) will evaluate the project’s success in improving mental wellbeing.

Chris Walsh, will be talking about how the project was set up and the learning so far.
