What Can Your Customers Really Save with Energy Efficient Improvements?

Being “green” is the new buzzword regarding both home and industry Energy efficiency, and a lot is being said about how much energy savings someone can realize by being green. Sure, we have all heard tales about saving hundreds or thousands of dollars per year being “green,” but what exactly are the facts behind this science?

Solar Hot Water

Providing hot water in a home or a business is a major fuel expense. A tank of hot water must always be kept to temperature, and once drained, it takes an enormous amount of energy to reheat the cold water during the refill time. Even tankless water heaters use a lot of energy to heat water to a temperature that is hot enough for use, and although advances have been made in energy savings for both, they are still big energy users.

Solar water heating uses the power of the sun to heat up the water, and even with an electric or gas powered back-up, a consumer may realize a 50% savings on their energy bill—just by using a solar powered water heating system.

LED Lighting

For both household and commercial uses, lighting is another large energy expense. The new wave of green lighting, LED, can replace both incandescent and florescent lighting.

When LED lighting is installed in a residential setting, savings can be 75% over typical incandescent lights, while lasting 25 times longer than a light bulb.

When LED’s are used in an industrial or commercial setting, there will also be a 75% energy savings over incandescents, and these lights last 25 times longer, too. When compared with fluorescent lights, an LED bulb will use 71% less energy and have double or triple the lifespan. Not only do they save money, but they also save labor costs in not having to be changed as often.

Wind Turbines

Wind turbines are becoming increasingly popular because they are relatively inexpensive, yet have the potential to reduce energy costs by up to 90%. With modern advances in materials and engineering, small wind electric systems are now available for the homeowner, while larger wind turbines can help offset the energy bills of commercial or industrial accounts.

Being Green in Other Ways

The big three we have just discussed are the most common ways to becoming green, being sustainable, and helping the environment, while saving money on an energy bill. But there are other green technologies available that are not as widely known, yet can still make a big difference in overall energy consumption and savings. For example…

  • Skylights
  • Power and Energy Management Systems
  • Insulation
  • Weatherization
  • Caulking

These are just some of the many ways to be “green” and save money.
