VW Unveils an Electric Car That Cost Less and Goes Father Than Tesla

Volkswagen has noted that they are working on an Electric Car named the I.D, which will cost less than $30,000 and has a range of up to 375 miles on a single charge. I.D is essentially cheaper than Tesla’s Model 3 and Chevrolet Bolt while maintaining a higher range than both vehicles. Tesla’s Model 3 is expected to hit the market in late 2017. It will retail at a starting price of $35,000 and has a driving range of 215 miles. Chevrolet Bolt is expected to go on sale at the end of the year and has a starting price of $37,500, before U.S. government breaks. It has 238 miles on a single charge.

An interesting point to note is that before comparing I.D’s range with Bolt and Tesla, you should be aware that they have used different methods to calculate the range of an Electric car. It is not quite clear on the method used by VW. The main catch with I.D’s low price is that it will go on sale in 2020 and there is no telling how much electric cars will have improved by then.

ID’s motor configuration is much like that one of BMW i3, with the engine driving rear, not front, wheels. The Lithium-ion battery is placed under the passenger compartment, resulting in a lowering of the center of gravity of the car. The I.D has a large inside as the mid-sized VW Passat. VW executives have indicated that the car will feature super-thin blue tires and a light-up VM insignia.

When I.D hits the market, it won’t ’be a self-driving car but will be loaded with all the hardware necessary to convert it to an autonomous vehicle. Full self-driving capability is expected to come later with a software update that can be downloaded wirelessly. Volkswagen has aggressive plans for the electric vehicle. It plans to have 20 electric or plug-in cars on the market before the I.D goes on sale.

Volkswagen sees the I.D as the company’s next major car. The car is revolutionary as the Beetle was seven decades ago and the first Golf was 40 years ago, according to the company.
