Trailer: Thomas Hayden Church and Boyd Holbrook Play Homeless Men in ‘Cardboard Boxer’

A homeless man (played by Thomas Haden Church) earns money entertaining a bunch of rich kids who pay impoverished men to fight each other. Cardboard Boxer (which is his appointed nickname) follows this man as he bides his time living on the streets. Although he panders to every whim of the rich kids out of desperation, his heart is revealed when he finds a connection with a little girl’s diary he came across in a dumpster and seeks to learn to read cursive so he can possibly return it to her. Keeping him company on the streets is a war veteran (played by Boyd Holbrook) who lost both his legs, leaving him to get around the streets in a wheelchair. Holbrook continues to impress with each role he plays, no matter how big or small. This role really looks to prove his worth as one of the finest character actors working today.

The cast also includes Terrence Howard, Marlo Thomas, Rhys Wakefield, David Henrie and Macy Gray. The directorial debut for Knate Lee (my god, there are a lot of excellent looking debuts this year!), Cardboard Boxer looks to be a heartfelt portrait of comradery and human kindness that have the power to exceed the constructs of economic status. It’s due in cinemas in the US later this month, but no word as of yet to it’s UK release. You can watch the trailer below.
