8 Hardware Features That Will Transform the iPhone

Apple has always been at the forefront of innovation, taking its time and release news before launches thereby creating markets with innovative products. This year, starting June 5th at the WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference). Every year, Apple hosts its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), where app makers who build software for Apple devices - like iPhones, Macs, and iPads - come together to discuss the latest developments in the tech world. WWDC provides a platform for developers to showcase their new ideas and software, and for Apple to showcase its latest hardware enhancing improvements.

In addition to the Macbook Pro Air 15 inch, the new VR/AR headset from Apple with a $3000 price tag, are these substantial hardware enhancements coming to the iconic iPhone. We will continue to update you on those prices and features. With the iPhone 15 series anticipated to be released possibly in September, these are hardware improvements we can look forward to.

Hardware

Apple is consistently known for setting the bar high for its competitors in terms of hardware advancements. This is because unlike its competitors, Apple controls and builds both hardware and software in its products making the two seam together better than other manufacturers. With each new generation of iPhones, Apple continues to push the boundaries and introduce cutting-edge features that enhance the user experience. However, there is always room for improvement, and we have identified several hardware features that could make future iPhones even better. Some are rumors still but evidence is strong that  at least 7 of these will be incorporated into the the iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Ultra.

Foldable iPhone Line

The concept of foldable smartphones has gained significant traction in recent years, and we believe Apple should join the foldable revolution. A foldable iPhone line would offer users the best of both worlds by combining the portability and convenience of a smartphone with the larger screen real estate of a tablet. In our articles about the new foldable phone trend, we highlighted the features of Google Pixel's foldable phone entry to this market currently dominated by the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 in a head-to-head comparison.

The compromise between smarphone and tablet has seem to settle into the foldable phone zone. If Apple is entering, it's reasonably safe to say that foldable phones are not just a fad.

The foldable screen concept is simple. There's a cover screen like a normal phone, but it opens like a book to reveal a larger screen on which today's faster processors allow real multitasking in multiple windows are a better gaming and viewing experience.

Here it is unfolded with a stylus. Hopefully the Apple Pencil will be compatible.

Enhanced Wireless Charging Speed

Wireless charging has become an increasingly popular feature in smartphones, and Apple's MagSafe technology has made it more convenient than ever. However, one area where wireless charging falls short is speed. To address this limitation, Apple could invest in improving the charging coil hardware, allowing for faster and more efficient wireless charging. By narrowing the gap between wired and wireless charging speeds, Apple can provide users with a truly seamless and convenient charging experience. As Android phones have reached full charges in only 90 minutes, Apple will need to increase its charging game significantly.

Titanium Build Option

Apple has always been synonymous with premium design and build quality. While the current aluminum and stainless steel options are impressive, we propose that Apple takes it up a notch by introducing a titanium build option. Titanium is a lightweight yet incredibly durable material that offers exceptional strength and scratch resistance. By incorporating a titanium build option, Apple can elevate the premium feel of its flagship iPhones and provide users with an even more luxurious experience. Up until now, the iPhone has been made of an aluminum frame.

Rumor has it, the titanium build may only be available on the iPhone 15 Ultra which is the phone that was originally expected to be called the iPhone 15 Pro Max as in previous releases. The sizes of the three iPhone 15s are rumored by good sources to be similar.

Advanced Touch ID

While Face ID has become the standard biometric authentication method on recent iPhones, there is still a significant demand for Touch ID. Recognizing this, we propose that Apple brings back Touch ID and enhances it for the future iPhones. By incorporating an improved and faster Touch ID sensor, Apple can offer users a choice between facial recognition and fingerprint scanning, catering to individual preferences and ensuring top-notch security.

Touch ID is proven to be safer than facial recognition for security. Leveraging the existing technology from the iPad Air's side-mounted Touch ID sensor, implementing it into the iPhone lineup should be a seamless transition. Android phone's recognition technology is excellent but Apple may improve on it.

High Refresh Rate Display

Display technology plays a crucial role in the overall user experience, and Apple has already made strides with its ProMotion display offering a 120Hz refresh rate. Almost all new phones have refresh rates of 120Hz these days.

However, to stay competitive with the evolving market, Apple should consider adopting a 144Hz display for its future iPhones. A higher refresh rate results in smoother animations, reduced eye fatigue, and improved responsiveness, especially for gaming enthusiasts. While there may be a slight trade-off in battery performance, the benefits of a 144Hz display will undoubtedly outweigh the minor sacrifice.

Extended Battery Life

Battery life has always been a priority for smartphone users, and Apple has made significant strides in this area with the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Plus models. To build on this success, Apple should continue prioritizing battery capacity across its entire lineup. By incorporating larger batteries and optimizing internal space utilization, Apple can ensure that all iPhone models provide exceptional battery life, further enhancing the user experience. Apple has completely done away with the physical SIM card and tray shown below. It's now a relic and obsolete for iPhone.

Embracing eSIM technology only, where both were used previously, can free up valuable space within the device, allowing for increased battery capacity without compromising on other hardware features. This will have an impact on some people. How those changes will affect consumers will vary by carrier.

8K Video Recording Capability

Apple has long been celebrated for its photography and videography capabilities. However, one area where it lags behind the competition is in 8K video recording. To address this gap, Apple should equip its future iPhones with 8K video recording capabilities. By leveraging the advancements in camera technology, Apple can empower users to capture stunningly detailed videos with unparalleled clarity and precision. With competitors already offering this feature, integrating 8K video recording into iPhones is a logical step forward. Samsung, Sony, OnePlus and others already have 8K recording in their flagship phones. This is an easy enhancement for iPhone.

Enhanced Cooling System

Intensive workloads and demanding applications can put a strain on a smartphone's performance and temperature. Apple has employed various techniques to manage heat, including throttling performance and dimming the screen to aid cooling. However, to provide a superior user experience, Apple should explore advanced cooling mechanisms such as high-quality thermal paste or vapor chamber cooling like the one below in this x-ray. By efficiently dissipating heat and maintaining optimal performance under heavy workloads, Apple iOS 8 can ensure that iPhones deliver consistent performance without compromising user satisfaction.

Apple has a remarkable track record of innovation, and there is no doubt that future iPhones will continue to push the boundaries of hardware excellence. By incorporating these suggested and rumored hardware features – including a titanium build option, a foldable iPhone line, faster wireless charging, enhanced Touch ID, high refresh rate displays, extended battery life, 8K video recording capability, and an advanced cooling system – Apple can solidify its position as a leader in the smartphone industry.
