House Speaker Johnson predicts ‘bipartisan agreement’ on two-step government funding plan

House Speaker Mike Johnson is optimistic about bipartisan support for a "laddered" continuing resolution to fund the government, which could prevent a government shutdown. He is meeting with House Republicans and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to finalize the numbers. While he is unsure of the level of support within his own party, he can only afford to lose three party votes. At least eight Republicans have already expressed opposition to the plan. However, some Democrats who were previously against the measure have signaled their support. President Joe Biden has not yet made a decision on whether he would veto or sign the bill.
