Mumbai-based Ngo Awaaz Foundation has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, informing him that green firecrackers, which are supposed to be less polluting, contain banned chemical substances. The foundation has been testing firecrackers for the past five years and found that many of the so-called "green crackers" contain Barium, a banned chemical. They have requested that the firecrackers, including the fake green ones, be withdrawn, as they contribute to air pollution in Mumbai, which already has high levels of PM2.5. The foundation's previous tests also showed that green crackers contained banned chemicals.
