Manila denounces Chinese Navy’s maneuvers in disputed waters

The Philippine military chief has accused China's navy of dangerously shadowing a Philippine ship during a recent standoff in Disputed Waters. China's presence near Thitu island in the South China Sea is believed to be an attempt to raise tensions and provoke Manila in their bilateral dispute over the Spratly Islands. The Philippine ship was en route to Commodore Reef within Manila's exclusive economic zone when the standoff occurred. China claims sovereignty over the region, but a 2016 UN arbitration court ruling dismissed their historical claims. Other countries with overlapping claims in the South China Sea include Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, and Taiwan.
