Kenya: Group urges awareness, treatment on mental health

A group called the Psychiatric Disability Organization (PDO) in Nakuru, Kenya is working to increase awareness and access to treatment for Mental Health issues. Many people in Kenya, like Joyce Mugure and Nancy Obegi, have struggled with mental health disorders without receiving a diagnosis or treatment. The PDO offers medication at a subsidized rate and free therapy sessions for those who cannot afford it. The World Health Organization reports that effective treatment coverage for mental health conditions is low in many countries, leading to discrimination, stigma, and human rights violations. The PDO estimates that around 2 million people in Kenya are living with mental health issues.
