The Muppet Show ended in 1981, but Jim Henson wanted to continue to provide fans with a daily dose of Muppets, so he hired cartoonist Guy Gilchrist to create a Muppets Comic Strip. Gilchrist was recommended by Mort Walker, the creator of Beetle Bailey, and after months of submitting strips, he was finally hired for the job. Gilchrist met with Jim Henson and was taught by him to capture the three-dimensional and lively nature of the Muppets in his drawings. The Muppets comic strip ran from 1981 to 1986 and appeared in over a thousand newspapers worldwide.
