Taking Stock of Two Decades of Trailblazing Protocol on Womens Rights in Africa

The Maputo Protocol, a groundbreaking protocol on African women's rights, was adopted by the African Union Assembly in 2003. Twenty years later, women's rights advocates are calling for real and tangible change in African countries to fully implement the protocol. The Solidarity for African Women's Rights (SOAWR) coalition has been instrumental in pushing for ratification of the protocol, resulting in 44 out of 55 African states ratifying or acceding to it. Progress has been made in areas such as national jurisprudence on women's rights and public awareness of taboo subjects like Reproductive Health Rights. However, challenges remain, and the report released by SOAWR, Make Every Woman Count, and Equality Now highlights the need for further action, including addressing the right to abortion and protecting reproductive health rights.
