Vietnamese authorities have released Bui Van Trung, 62, and his son Bui Van Tham, 36, who belong to an unofficial branch of the Hoa Hao Buddhist community, after serving six-year prison sentences for disrupting public order. The Hoa Hao religion is officially recognized by the government, but dissenting groups face harsh controls and harassment. Trung, who leads the Ut Trung Home Church, was transferred to a hospital for colon cancer treatment. Trung's daughter and wife were also convicted in 2018, but have since been released. Trung will require chemotherapy treatment for his cancer after recovering from surgery.
