Arsenal pair key to revolution
Looking at the Premier League table, to call Arsenal’s transformation revolutionary would seem knee-jerk. Should the sides behind them win their games in hand on the Gunners (albeit much easier said than done), Mikel Arteta’s side will be 5th, one point clear of chasing West Ham and Manchester United.
Not a massive improvement on eighth place then.
But on the pitch, for the most part, the performances have been much improved, especially in recent weeks where the Gunners have seen their young core come into their own.

Key to their improved performances are defensive additions Takehiro Tomiyasu and Ben White, signed in the summer for a combined 66 million pounds. Both have added poise and on-the-ball ability to Arteta’s youthful defence, with Tomiyasu in particular impressing watching fans.

One thing noticed by the Arsenal faithful, however, is how little the two play the ball between each other. Specifically, why Ben White rarely finds his full-back when looking for a pass.
Now, however, it has been explained.
Ben White backs up Tomiyasu’s tactical claim
Earlier in the season, Tomiyasu himself revealed the reason that he felt he didn’t get the ball from his centre-back as often as other players, saying:
‘I play centre back too, and simple passes to the full-backs are actually the last option I consider. If the full-back is not under opposition pressure I will play the pass, but if the winger is right in front, you’ll end up caught by the press.”
And now, in a recent interview with Goal Japan, Ben White has confirmed that it is for tactical reasons. The former Brighton man claimed:
