Jonuel: Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
Groves: I try to be more original. I really don't like following specific guidelines when it comes to sticking with a certain genre.
I want readers to say that my story was original and unique. I want them to discuss it with me or other fans about what made it unique. In other words, safe is not
a word in my vocabulary.
Jonuel: Do you want each Book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
Groves: I like each book to stand on its own. Although I wrote a series, each book had a satisfying ending. I am in the process of writing more stand alone books and none will be connected in
any way. All new characters along with all new settings.
Jonuel: What does literary success look like to you?
Groves: Literary success means that I will be able to quit my day job and write full time. I'm about 2-3 years off from that.
Jonuel: What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
Groves: I will list an example here. For Margo's Lullaby, I researched the subject of school shootings for a year before I even typed Chapter 1. I read the whole police report from Columbine. The report just for
that incident was 11,000 pages, hence the year. I read all the news articles, watched all the documentaries, etc. I pretty much have the shooter's day memorized now.
Jonuel: Do you believe in writer’s block?
Groves: I believe in it. I've suffered from it. I've had months go by where nothing came to me, and an unfinished work sitting in my files. If I find I'm getting it, then I will walk away and start another project, that usually
helps rekindle my inspiration.
