How do you grow as a person? What does that even mean? Personal growth is something that you have to define for yourself, but there are a few paths that can take you there. Education, a commitment to Lifelong Learning, seeking new experiences, setting goals, and acing your time management skills are all ways to drive personal growth in your life. Getting a Degree If you don’t already have a college degree, getting one can be an important step in personal growth for several reasons. First, it can greatly enrich your life. You’ll have the opportunity to be exposed to many different ideas and different types of people. Second, it can launch you on a new career. Even if you already have a degree, you may need to return to school to retrain for a different job, and it can have this affect a second time around. Simply put, education can open doors for you that may launch you in directions that you never imagined would be possible. Unfortunately, for many people, the cost of a formal education can feel like a barrier to this kind of growth. Fortunately, there are many different ways to pay for your college education, including Going Merry scholarships for college students. You can search online for scholarships you are eligible for and apply for them online as well. Lifelong Learning Formal education is one thing, but a crucial element of personal growth is a commitment to lifelong learning. This can come in both formal and informal ways, ranging from taking classes and attending seminars to reading, researching, and talking to other people on your own to learn more. It’s never been easier to spend your whole life learning, using apps, free courses online, video tutorials, podcasts and more. Above all, you should cultivate a curiosity about the world and keep asking questions that keep you engaged. Have New Experiences Have you ever wondered why time moved so slowly when you were a child and passes so quickly for you as an adult? One reason is because when you were younger, so many experiences were new to you. You can keep having new experiences as an adult, and it may not even be as difficult to do so as you might imagine. While you can certainly seek out big new experiences, such as traveling to another country, you can also integrate new experiences into your everyday life. One way to do this is by approaching the familiar in a new way. You can consider a staycation if there are streets near your home or workplace that you’ve never walked down before or restaurants that you’ve never tried? What happens when you pick a particular stretch of sidewalk or corner of your yard to observe carefully at the same time each day? Giving this level of attention to the brand new or the every day can produce new insights and can make your life feel bigger. Goals for Growth Setting goals is an excellent way to drive your personal growth forward. Your personal goals can cover an almost unlimited number of topics: you may want to improve your relationships, learn to meditate, complete a triathlon, or read a particular series of books. Your goals should be specific and time limited. That means that get better at Spanish won’t cut it; instead, you need something like have three informal conversations with Spanish speakers about the weather by July 1 or reach level B1 by May. Specificity like this gives you something to strive for and helps you see your progress. Improve Your Time Management One of the biggest barriers to personal growth can be a lack of time. Between work duties and family obligations, you may feel as though you have little time to devote to growth. While there can actually be times when this is the case, such as when you’re a new parent, what’s usually needed is better time management skills. Thinking of your time as budgeted in the same way you budget your money can help. When you take a critical look at how you spend your time, you may find that you’re doing things like using the internet or streaming series aimlessly when you could use that time to work toward your goals. Be sure, however, that you give yourself down time as well. Sometimes, mindlessly scrolling online or bingeing a brain relaxing series is exactly what you need to relax and unwind.
