"Is anyone else seeing that the girls are crushing the boys": Teacher Stirs Up Debate on Girls Surpassing Boys, Citing Insights from Thousands of Educators

Social media is debating why girls are "crushing" boys, and some went as far as expressing, "The boys are straight up Peter Panning right now, it's like they are becoming lost."

From Reddit to TikTok

A former educator talked about a Reddit post titled, "Is there anyone else seeing the girls crushing the boys right now? In literally everything?" The ex-teacher took to TikTok to talk about this phenomenon, not because it is new but because things were never this bad for boys.

The post that started it all

The Reddit poster shared how, during the first student council meeting for kids aged 11 and 12, there were 46 girls and five boys. The Reddit user shared, "The boys' representation has been falling year over year, and we are talking by grade 5." They asked, "Is anyone else seeing the girls absolutely demolish the boys right now? Is this a problem we need to be addressing?"

Emma, a former high school teacher, said that the original Reddit post reminded her of her old school, where they would pick a male and a female student of the month. When officials announced the girl's nomination, there was a list of her accomplishments. The boy was praised for showing up to school on time.

The school had to lower the GPA

Emma said the school had to lower the GPA from 3.5 to 3.2 "because they couldn't find enough boys eligible to fill every month." The ex-teacher called it "jarring" when it came to making formal announcements and how girls were presented as overachievers while the boys were underperforming.

Thousands of teachers saw the same thing

On Reddit and TikTok, thousands of teachers shared their experiences. The crisis among boys is so alarming that there is now a term, "male academic underperformance." Emma also shared, "Way more women than men are attending college. Way more women than men are becoming doctors and lawyers and getting those kinds of degrees."

What is happening

One teacher noticed that boys were starting to underperform around the 7th grade. They wrote about how they run extension programs at an F-6 school (5-12 years), adding, "There is only one boy in my 11-12 group of 15." The poster added, "I can see it in my boys as the age groups go up, they are disengaging from the system."

So many theories

One person wondered, "Is it possible that some boys don't feel they have to work as hard because everything just works out for them?" Another agreed, "Is it possible that some boys don't feel they have to work as hard because everything just works out for them?"

Colleges noticed this trend

One person shared on TiukTok, "I'm an undergrad college professor and have noticed this. My female students go above and beyond while my male students argue with me and complain." A high school teacher said, "I think this is why so many are starting to call college a waste of time."

Girls perform better in all subjects

Daniel Voyer, Ph.D., of the University of New Brunswick, Canada, was the lead researcher on this topic, and it concluded, "Females have the advantage on school grades regardless of the material."

Well kept secret

Co-author Susan Voyer added, "The fact that females generally perform better than their male counterparts throughout what is essentially mandatory schooling in most countries seems to be a well-kept secret."

Parenting fails

One person shared, "I have had many parents of Kindergarten kids say crazy things like 'boys don't need to learn to read because they're good at math.'" Another teacher added, "Almost every male student I had lacked any sort of ambition or goal; The ones that had goals were often bullied about them by the other boys."

More teachers joined

This person shared, "As a male teacher, I try to engage every struggling boy, but the girls are just so much easier to teach content to." Another added, "My district got rid of accelerated/honors classes in middle school because the boys couldn't meet the requirements or keep up with the girls in class."
