“Mad” boss sets a new rule forbidding all employees from requesting time off and those who are against it can “go find a job somewhere else”

Dealing with time off from work can be a challenging topic, as bosses tend to have their own preferred ways of managing such requests. Ideally, jobs should allow for personal or vacation days, yet one particular boss has introduced a rule that is far from ideal.

A Florida-based Employee shared a post on the r/antiwork subreddit detailing how their boss has introduced a new rule that forbids employees from requesting time off.

The message stated that personal and vacation days were being taken away from staff members because the boss believed that employees were taking time off instead of working.

"From now on, no one can request days off anymore,” wrote the boss, explaining, “I will do the schedule and if you don't show up, you are automatically fired. If you don't like it, go find a job somewhere else."

The boss seems to be standing firm in their decision, stating that employees who don’t like the new rule should look for a job “somewhere else.”

The boss then went on to announce to the entire staff that a mandatory assembly had been arranged for 9:30 p.m., during which they would likely be discussing the implementation of the latest policy.

Apparently, the boss was unhappy with employees requesting time off and instituted the rule to prevent scheduling those who may not show up for work.

The employee who works at the company added in the Reddit post's caption that his boss would only create the work schedule 5 hours before the start of the workday.

Despite having approved time off months in advance, employees were still scheduled to work as their management "forgot."

Managing Schedules Seems "Impossible"

According to the OP, this was the first job they had where the management team struggled with scheduling, as managing it seemed like an “impossible” task to do.

The situation was made more difficult since schedules were created just hours before the start of the workday.

Boss's Habit of Blaming Staff

The employee also explained that his boss had a tendency to “blame” the staff for any mistakes rather than taking responsibility.

His current plan to tackle this problem is to speak up during the meeting and address the critical issues that actually need attention.

Even though employers have the right to approve or deny allotted time off, based on their organizational policies, employees still have the option to take unpaid leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

The FMLA enables eligible employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave every year while maintaining medical benefits.

Many Redditors were in agreement that not attending the meeting would be a powerful way for the employees to show their disapproval of the new policy, as evidenced by the comment, "I hope nobody goes to the meeting.”

And while some advised quitting the job as a response to the boss's policy, others suggested a more passive approach, with one user writing, “I wouldn’t. I just wouldn’t show up the next shift. Let him scramble”.

Striking for Change

“This is a perfect time for all employees to strike,” suggested one Redditor.

“Go to the building and refuse to go in until this manager is fired and they get a raise and added PTO days. Anyone [who] shows up to interview, show them the messages.”
