13 Common Hair Care Myths Debunked

Tags: hair

So you think you know everything about Hair care? Well, maybe you know a lot. But truth be told, there are lots of hair care myths out there that promise you a healthy-looking hair. Now, if you love your hair, take our advice: “Don’t you dare fall for them. Rather, do your homework and research.”

Don’t worry, though. We’ve already rounded up 13 of the most popular hair care myths below to ease you of the burden of searching for hair care misconceptions. That way, you can focus more on what you should do and what not.

Here you go:

Myth #1: You need to brush your hair 100 times a day.

You’ve probably heard about this myth already. They say brushing your hair 100 times a day will help it grow longer and healthier. But you know what? You should check the facts. Brushing too much can only cause the hair to break. If you need to brush it, do it gently to evenly distribute the natural oils throughout your hair shaft.

Myth #2: You must not use a brush on wet hair.

This is another popular hair care myth. Some say we should only use a comb when brushing wet hair. The truth is hair is more fragile when wet. Even if you use a brush or a comb, you cannot deny the fact that it is prone to breakage. If you feel the need to comb, you can try a wet brush. It is a brush that is designed for smoothing wet hair. You can purchase them at the nearest salon or order them online.

Myth #3: You should trim your hair regularly to help it grow faster.

Are you guilty of believing this myth? If only it is that easy. Of course, regular trims are essential because they can keep your tresses healthy. But the act of trimming does not actually make it grow faster. What it only does is it gets rid of the split ends that are making your hair less manageable.

Myth #4: Split ends can be treated.

Speaking of split ends, you might have met somebody who believes that split ends can be cured. Unfortunately, as of this writing, there is no product in this world that can cure or treat split ends. Again, the only way to get rid of them is to cut them off. Once the hair is split, you cannot put it back together. It can either break or split up all the way to the scalp. You don’t want that to happen, right? That is why regular trims are important. You need not buy expensive creams, serums, shampoos, and conditioners. Just cut them!

Myth #5: Conditioners aren’t for people with oily scalp.

Do you have an oily scalp? You’ve probably been told not to use a conditioner as it will make your condition worse. Here’s the truth, though. No matter how oily your scalp is, your hair still needs to be conditioned to prevent breakage. So as not to worsen your oily scalp problems, better use a natural leave-in conditioner or clarifying shampoo since these products won’t weigh your hair down.

Myth #6: Dandruff is caused by dry scalp.

No, dandruff is not caused by dry scalp. Instead, it is a result of an oily scalp. The flakes that fall on your shoulder are formed because of a certain type of yeast called Malassezia, which only thrives in an oily environment. To fight dandruff, use a shampoo that contains tea tree extract because it is known for its antifungal properties.

Myth #7: You should not color your hair if you are pregnant.

This statement is quite debatable. However, there are already studies that can prove that a small amount of the hair color will get into the bloodstream. To be safe, you can try a balayage. It is a hair painting technique, where color is not directly applied to the scalp. If you are pregnant and you insist on coloring your locks, opt for a semi-permanent color because it does not contain ammonia or peroxide. But for safety reasons, consult your doctor first, especially if you are not certain about the effects of hair coloring to your pregnancy.

Myth #8: Rinsing the hair with beer can make it stronger, shinier, and thicker.

Is this really true? Well, no. The alcohol that is present in the beer can only cause your strands to become dehydrated. Although there is actually protein in the beer that can repair your hair, the alcohol content overpowers it. So, don’t rinse your hair with beer. Just drink it.

Myth #9: Going outside with wet hair can make you sick.

Do you really think that walking outside with wet hair can make you ill? Here’s the truth. Colds are caused by a certain type of virus. Though having a wet hair can make you feel a bit cold, that’s really not a problem.

Myth #10: Switching shampoos every now and then is a good idea.

This can either be true or false. Sometimes, if your hair is feeling dull and flat, you can at least clarify it to get rid of any styling product residue. If you are comfortable with using the same shampoo and your hair is okay with it, then continue. While it’s fun to try new things, it’s still a case-to-case basis for your hair.

Myth #11: You can cut curly hair the same way as straight hair.

It is absolutely impossible to cut curly hair the same as straight hair. So, when you visit the salon, do not force your stylist to straighten your hair first to achieve the hairstyle you want. Straightening curly hair and following a style for straight hair can only take away the natural beauty of the coils. As a result, the style will end up to be squarer, which you’d probably hate.

Myth #12: Pulling out white or gray hair can cause it to multiply.

No! It won’t happen, but pulling out white or gray hair can only cause bald spots or scarring. If you love your hair, just leave those colored strands alone.

Myth #13: Thinning hair is common among older women.

Hair loss and thinning hair are caused by many different factors. But among all, hormones have a greater impact. And even if you don’t have any hair loss gene, you can still experience this problem, especially if you expose your hair constantly to chemicals and colors or wear tight ponytails and braids.

There you have it! We’ve finally debunked those myths. Some of these myths you may have already heard about. But if not, it’s high time that you change your belief. Always get to the facts before you act on any myths. Okay?
