3 Amazing Benefits of Steaming Your Legs

Facial steaming gets all the fanfare when it comes to facial steamers, but there are other applications for your Facial Steamer. What else is it good for? A few different things actually. Your legs are one example. If you think that is a crazy idea, keep reading…

Steaming your legs? Are you serious? Actually…yes. If you read the Men’s Guide to Using a Facial Steamer post, then you might see where this is headed. If you haven’t, give it a quick glance. And if you’re in the habit of using a yoni steamer, you’ve already been steaming your legs, you just maybe didn’t realize it.

Your legs count for about 20% of your overall Skin, but it’s an often overlooked area of skincare. So it would make sense to pay some attention and pamper your legs. Your skin is an organ all to itself. Not just your face, not just your upper torso, but it encompasses your overall body. If you neglect one area of your skin on your body, other areas can suffer. So a comprehensive skin care routine is good practice.

How will this benefit me?

Do you have dry, or itchy skin on your legs? Do you get blackheads on your legs after shaving? Is shaving your legs a hassle? Do you have tough hair that won’t budge? Are you looking for a closer shave?

These are just some of the issues women (and men) have with their legs. Let’s dive in!

Blackheads

Your skin generally works the same way wherever it is located on your body. Think of your different skin areas like siblings. The skin on your legs are related to the skin on your face. So they are going to have a certain degree of similarities. In that regard, pores, and skin follicles function the same on your legs, as they do on your face, back, arms, etc.

When your pores get clogged from a combination of dead skin cells, and sebum (body oil), etc, a “whitehead” can form in your hair follicles. When that whitehead is then exposed to air, it turns into a blackhead. Since you have hair on your legs, blackheads are only natural.

Other factors can also cause blackheads. Hormonal changes can cause an overproduction of sebum, which in turn triggers blackheads. Clothing can also play a major part in two ways. Pants, leggings, pantyhose etc., can carry dirt and deliver them to your pores. Secondly, clothing that irritates your skin plays a role in producing more dead skin cells.

Do you get a rash of blackheads on your thighs after shaving? It just might be from the tight pants, or leggings that you put on right after.

You’re probably familiar by now how the facial steamer method is so great at removing blackheads from your face. Well that same routine will also work wonders for your legs.

Dry Skin on your legs

There are a host of factors that play into dry skin: Too much sun, irritating clothing, harsh soaps and cleansers, bad shaving techniques, etc.

By using a facial steamer on your legs, with the usual correct routine, you can hydrate the skin on your legs, and get back that supple feel and shine.

We’ve covered this already, but steaming your skin makes your pores open up. Think of it like your metabolism after working out. You burn X amount of calories, lift weights, etc., and your metabolism responds by kicking into overdrive. In the same way that your body is hungry for food after exercise, your pores are hungry for food after steaming. Which is why adding moisturizer after using your facial steamer is so effective. A once a week, or every other week interval can be very effective.

Shaving

If you read the Men’s Guide, then you should be familiar with the benefits of steaming before shaving. For those that haven’t, lets do a really quick recap – the steam open up your pores, and softens the hair.

I could do a longer recap, but those are the essential two parts. Barbers apply a hot steamy towel before shaving a man’s face, which is the essential step in getting that professional barber shave – not to mention the relaxing qualities. With your pores opened up, and the hair softened, it provides two essential benefits.

1.) It limits the amount of razor burns, and amount of strokes needed with the razor. Add that to the softened hair, and it leads to a really smooth shave. 2.) It provides a clean canvas of skin to shave. Nothing leads to acne more than shaving dirty skin. As you shave, you just push the dirt, dead skin cells, and oil directly into your pores, hair follicles, and cuts – if any.

Shaving your legs go hand in hand with blackheads, so steaming your legs doesn’t sound so crazy after all does it?

How to do it

The overall process of steaming your legs will very much resemble the technique used in steaming your face: Clean, exfoliate, steam, apply a mask, splash with cool water, apply moisturizer, etc. If you don’t really suffer from acne or blackheads on your thighs or legs, you can skip the mask portion, but definitely don’t forget to add moisturizer.

The steaming portion is where things might get tricky. Some facial steamers adapt very well to steaming your legs, but others require a bit of gymnastics.

Yoni Steamer

If you have a yoni steamer, you can very easily adapt your setup to cater to your legs. You’ll most likely just have to stand instead of sit.

If you have a handheld facial steamer, that’s perfect. Just apply steam to your legs, in the same motion as you would while shaving.

Steamer with steam pipe

If your facial steamer comes with, or is fitted with a steam pipe, that should be fairly easy to use as well. Just move your legs up and down to navigate the steam across your skin.

Upright facial steamer

For those with steamers that just shoot the steam straight up, or at an angle, you may find this application to be a bit harder. I would suggest lying down, with your legs raised above, or facing the steamer. Now that I think about it, this is also a good ab workout too.

Conclusion

There were three main benefits discussed in this post: blackheads and acne, dry skin, and leg shaving. If you are dealing with any of these issues, give your facial steamer a try. Even if you don’t see any visual benefits, your legs will definitely appreciate being pampered.
