What are the Benefits of Vaginal Steaming? And Does Your Vagina Need It?

Vaginal Steaming. Sounds like a spa day for your va-jay-jay, right? It pretty much is. Also known as “yoni steaming” or “v-steam,” this health treatment has a woman squat or sit over a steaming pot of water stewing with special herbs such as mugwort, motherwort, rosemary, and wormwood.

But why would anyone do that?

V-steam spa owner, Alica Uzor

“The herbs are medicinal, and it’s very relaxing,” says spa owner, Alicia Uzor, owner of Chai-Yok V-Steam Spa in Charlotte, NC, who serves about 7 clients a day and hosts v-steam bridal parties. Uzor became skilled in the practice of holistic health and alternative therapy while living in West Africa for 8 years.

“While you’re sitting there, you notice a host of benefits.” Some suggested benefits include restored pH balance, reduced menstrual cramping, hormone balance, shortened menstrual cycles, and a fresher, uh, aroma down there. Advocates say the steam can treat urinary infections, infertility, and help increase your sex drive, too.

Vaginal steaming is nothing new. In fact, it’s been practiced for centuries, with origins in Korea. But it’s gained popularity over the last few years when certain celebrities tried it and got it trending. Twin sisters Tia and Tamera Mowry shared the experience on their show. And just this summer, model Chrissy Teigen added it to her self-care routine.

The Mowry twins experience a vagina detox together.

At Uzor’s spa, the treatment lasts about 40 minutes and costs $65 for the initial visit. She recommends that clients visit no more than twice a month. It is not recommended for pregnant women at all.

Does it really work?

Depends on who you ask. The treatment has its detractors, of course, who question the safety and validity of the benefits. There is no scientific evidence to prove it, either way. That said, talk to your own gynecologist and do your research to decide what’s best for your vagina.
