Should You Massage Restylane to Help Results?

Restylane is an injectable product used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, volumize lips, and add definition to other facial features such as the cheeks and jawline.

With the increasing popularity of Dermal Fillers, there is some confusion about what you should do after you’ve received Restylane.

Here, Dr. Jose Barrera discusses whether or not you should Massage Restylane to help results and how to optimize and prolong your Restylane treatments.

What Happens When You Massage Restylane?

It’s important to understand that dermal fillers, including Restylane, are semi-malleable products designed to mold to the injection site and gradually become firmer. This is how they can add volume to a particular location while adapting to the patient’s individual facial anatomy.

This hardening process usually takes between 5-7 days, and during this early post-injection phase, the Restylane (or other dermal fillers) can disperse and sometimes form localized lumps. If you massage Restylane during this time, you will spread it and change its appearance.

Should I Massage Restylane?

Massaging Restylane depends entirely on your provider’s recommendation and the results you’re experiencing.

If you’ve received treatment from an adequately trained and experienced provider, there should be no reason to massage your Restylane injections, as the procedure should be completed properly upon injection.

However, in some cases, small lumps can form in the Restylane, which might require gentle massaging with your fingertip or Q-tip 2-3 times per day to help disperse the product and prevent any uneven aesthetic from forming.

Before doing anything post-filler injection, the best course of action is to consult first with your provider, who can advise you according to your circumstances.

Importantly, if your Restylane injections are part of a more significant procedure, such as a liquid facelift, then you should certainly discuss with your provider before taking any action, as massaging dermal fillers will change their appearance and can upset the balance of a liquid facelift.
