Before Halloween, there was Samhain. Samhain is a very religious holiday which suits the holidays of the Day of the Dead. Basically, Samhain has no specific date when it is celebrated but is counted on the 8th full moon after the spring equinox. The Celtic legend says that the barrier between the good world and the evil world (called hell and heaven) has broken out during this time and people can reach the underworld and meet any creature on both sides. Plus, the time should stop for two days and everyone gets trapped between the worlds. The Celtic people think it’s New Year’s Eve. Samhain is the origin of the traditional Halloween apple game, which is also called the swinging apple.
