If you are trying to get pregnant, you obviously want to know what the earliest signs of pregnancy are and when do implantation bleeding occur.
What is implantation?
Implantation is a process by which a fertilised egg attaches it self to the back wall of the uterus.
After sexual intercourse, sperm travels from the vagina through the opening of the cervix, into the uterus and then into the fallopian tubes.
Only one in a million of sperms ejaculated by male is able to fertilise or penetrate the egg. Once the egg has been penetrated by a sperm no other sperm can penetrate the egg again.
The egg lives for only 24 hours if it is not fertilised by a sperm. A sperm can survive up to 4-5 days in the body of a woman.
But if a successfully fertilisation occurs, the egg starts to divide rapidly. It continues to divide as it is swept through the fallopian tube into the womb or uterus.
Once it arrives in the uterus it attaches itself to the lining of the uterus. It does this by digging deep in the thick lining to bury itself in it.
When Does Implantation Bleeding Occur?
A small amount of blood is loss often during implantation which is often with or without a mild cramp. This light vaginal spotting occurs around the expected time of your next period. Bleeding during implantation occurs around 6-7 days after conception when the blastocyst (the divided cells) arrives in the uterus.
The color of the bleeding can be light pink or light brown or light red. It appears in small amount and goes away with 2 hours or 2 days.
When the blastocyst break down the uterine lining to embed itself some blood may be shed. Depending on how thick and the quality of the lining is.
It the uterine lining is not rich enough the fertilised egg may not be able to plant itself in it.
How long after After Ovulation can it occur
The blastocyst (ball of cells) reaches the uterus 6-7 days after conception. But in general 7 days after leaving the ovary i.e after ovulation, implantation can occur.
The time it occurs varies from 7-10 days after ovulation. For some women the blastocysts floats in the cavity of the uterus until about ten days after ovulation.
Then on the tenth day, it embeds itself into the uterine lining.
It is very easy to mistake early pregnancy cramping and spotting for a period.
Implantation Symptoms and signs?
Here are signs and symptoms to known if implantation has occurred:
1. Implantation Spotting
Vaginal spotting before a missed period is one of the obvious sign that implantation has taken place. Spotting a few days before your expected period is a sign that the fertilised egg has attached itself to the lining of the walls of the uterus to develop and grow.
Not all women, experience any form of vaginal bleeding or spotting as an early sign of pregnancy.
You can still be pregnant even though you didn't spot or bleed.
If you do notice a scanty light pinkish or brownish blood on your panties that is not as heavy as your normal period. And it goes away with a day or 2 days then congratulations you may be pregnant.
Remember the best way to confirm if pregnant is to take a pregnancy test. Either a home kit urine test or a blood test from your doctor or mid wife.
2. Implantation Cramping
Cramping before period is another common sign of the implantation process. Although these cramps are less painful when compared to the cramps experienced during menstruation.
The cramps occurs in the lower abdomen either on the right or left side or on both. You may also have a back pain for a few days.
Some women are very sensitive, that they can feel when the fertilised egg is moving down the fallopian tube. They know they have become pregnant just a few days after conception.
3. Changes in Breast
A lot of changes are going on in your body right now. And one of them is your breast. Your breast may start to feel heavier and fuller than normal.
In addition, you may start to feel a tingling sensation around the nipple area. Your areola also starts to get darker than usual and overall your breast is more tender.
4. Bloating
Another common sign is the fullness and gassy feeling. An increase in the level of oestrogen and progesterone hormone is responsible for this.
5. Increased Body Basal Temperature
Basal Body temperature is the temperature of your body at rest. It is usually lower than your normal body temperature.
A woman's basal body temperature rises during implantation and it can serve as an early sign of pregnancy.
A lot of women track BBT to detect or predict ovulation. if you already do this, keep tracking even after ovulation and if it keeps increasing, it is a sign of implantation.
The BBT rises at ovulation due to the increase in the progesterone hormone. And if pregnant the progesterone hormone remains high to sustain pregnancy.
6. Frequent Urination
Frequent urination can start as early as a week after fertilisation. This is because your body is going through a lot of changes.
More blood is being pumped into your pelvis and this in turn puts pressure on your bladder.
This pressure causes you to want to pee more frequently.
What Does Spotting Look Like in Pictures
Spotting is lighter than your normal period. Here are pictures of what it looks like:
It is light and not heavy. The color is bright red or light pink or light brown spotting.
When to take a pregnancy Test
The only assured way to check if pregnant is to take a pregnancy test. However, the problem is too many women test for pregnancy too early.
If you notice spots of blood wait at least a week after a missed or late period to test for pregnancy.
Testing too early can result in a negative pregnancy result. Wait a couple of more days and try again.
Having a negative pregnancy result but having pregnancy symptoms?
These can happen for a variety of reasons. The most common one is that the home pregnancy test kit is not able to detect the HCG( Human chorionic gonadotropin) hormone yet.
The HCG hormone is released by the placenta after a successful implantation. But a pregnancy test strip may be unable to pick this up if it is too low.
You can visit your doctor if you suspect you are pregnant but you are getting a negative result.
Your doctor or midwife will carry out a blood test to see if you are or not.
