Krishna Janmashtmi is also known as Krishnashtmi, Saatam Aatham, Gokulashtmi, Ashtmi Rohini, Srikrishna Jayanti. It is celebrated once in a year, the celebration as the birth of Hindu deity Krishna, which is the 8th avataar of Lord Vishnu.
This lovely festival is celebrated on the 8th day (Ashtmi) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the the Bhadrapad hindu month.

History behind the festival
Lord Krishna was the 8th son of Devaki and Vasudeva. As per the astrological calculations, the date of Krishna’s birth, which is called as Janmashtmi is th 18th July 3228 BCE and he lived until 18th February 3102 BCE.
Lord Krishna belonged to the Vrishni clan of of Yadavas from Mathura, and he was 8th son, who was born to princess Devaki and her husband Vasudeva.
Mathura (in present-day is Mathura district in Uttar Pradesh) was one of the capital of Yadavas, to which Krishna’s parents Vasudeva and Devaki belonged to.
Celebrations of the Janmashtmi
The Gokulashtmi or Janmashtmi is celebrated by Hindus all over the world, by fasting, worshipping Lord Krishna and staying up till the midnight, and people offer prayers at the special time, when Lord Krishna is believed to have been taken birth.
How it is celebrated in Maharashtra
Janmashtmi or Gokulashtmi is also popularly known as Dahi Handi in Pune and Mumbai. Dahi Handi is being celebrated as the event which includes the making of pyramid and breaking of the earthern pot (Handi) filed with the buttermilk(dahi). The Handi is tied at the convenient height.
