How Long Hair Extensions Last?

How Long Do Hair Extensions Last?

You love fashion and experimenting with new looks. You have often wondered what it would be like to have long, beautiful tresses like the models in the magazines. It would take a while to grow your hair long, and you may not even be able to do it without getting split ends.

You know you can get extensions, but you wonder how long they will last, how much time you will have to spend getting them, and how realistic they will look.

If you want long-lasting, great-looking Hair Extensions in Miami, it is important to do your homework. Both human hair and synthetic hair are used to make extensions. There are also several different extension designs. The life span of the extensions will depend on the quality of the materials, the design, and the technician who puts them in.

Synthetic Vs. Human Hair

When you make your appointment to get hair extensions, you will have the option of those made from human hair or synthetic materials. The synthetic materials used to create extensions include:

  • Acrylonitrile
  • Acrylic
  • Polyethylene-terephthalate
  • PVC
  • Silicone
  • Single-filament polyester
  •  Silk
  • Vinyl

Human hair extensions are more expensive than synthetic extensions, but they will last much longer. They should last about a year or more if they are put in and cared for properly. This does not mean you can wear them for a year straight. They will have to be taken in and out from time to time for adjustments and maintenance.

Synthetic hair extensions require more maintenance than real hair. Furthermore, you will not be able to color synthetic hair or style it with heat. If you try to use a curling iron, the extensions will break. You can both color and style natural hair extensions.

Sew In Extensions

Extensions that are sewn in are very realistic looking and convenient. They need to be removed every 4 to 6 weeks so that they do not affect the normal growth of your hair. The process starts by braiding the hair into cornrows. Most hairstylists will tell you that sew-in extensions work well with very thick hair. You can use either human hair or synthetic hair for this type of extension.

If you use human hair for your extensions, you will be able to wash them as often as you would wash your own hair. It is best to use mild products that your hairstylist recommends.

Microlink Extensions

Microlinks are considered the most natural-looking type of hair extensions. They can last from 2 to three months if you care for them properly. Tiny beads are attached to your hair, and the extensions are attached to the beads. It is important to go to a reputable hair salon for this process. The beads have to be of very high quality. Cheap microlinks can easily break apart when you wash them.

When you have this type of extension, you should condition your hair regularly, but you should never put any conditioner on your hair’s roots. Put the conditioner on the ends of your hair instead.

Tape Extensions

Tape hair extensions are most often made from human hair. They are attached close to the root of your hair with an adhesive that is more like glue than tape. The extensions grow naturally with the hair. They will grow out in a way that is similar to hair color or an old-fashion perm.

Like hair color or a perm, they will last around six weeks before they have to be touched up. You should not wash hair with tape extensions in them as often as you would if they were not there.

With regular maintenance from a trained professional, you can reuse these hair extensions about three times.

Clip in Extensions

Clip-in extensions are the most economical choice. People often use clip-in extensions for a special event or a photograph. The synthetic type of clip-ons can only be worn a handful of times. There are natural hair clip-ons that can last for up to 6 months.

If you have a big event, such as a wedding or reunion coming up, clip-in extensions can make you look younger. They will also give you more hairstyle options for your big night.

It is best to get a salon to design clip-in extensions and put them in for you. It is hard to see what you are doing when you put extensions on your hair.

What to Look for in a Stylist

A person must be a licensed cosmetologist to put in other people’s hair extensions. You should pick a stylist who has plenty of experience. Miami is a town with a fabulous nightclub scene. There are many fine stylists in town. Find one who has styled hair for red-carpet events and has advanced training. Expertly done extensions can make you feel like a celebrity.
