Five minutes with…Dublin camogie star Sarah O’Donovan

Sarah O’Donovan is not only an All-Star athlete, she’s also Engagement and Communication Lead at the Mark Pollock Trust, and she has a keen interest in style. Having won All-Ireland’s for her home county Cork, she moved to Dublin for work and began playing with the Dublin panel in 2015.

Fresh off winning her third senior Camogie championship in a row with club St. Vincents, Sarah got real with us about her guilty pleasures, favourite fashion brand and the moto she lives by.

You lead a busy lifestyle, juggling work and camogie. How do you stay mentally focussed when it comes to training?

“I regard training as a necessary evil….I dislike training but I love to play matches….one does not go without the other so the games not yet won are my motivation on the nights I don’t want to be there.”

What is your least favourite gym exercise?

“Lunges – I have appalling balance and two dodgy knees…I’d do core exercises all day long to avoid lunges!”

What is your one food guilty pleasure?

“A whole garlic bread baguette and a bottle of coke as a snack….”

What do you like to do to relax?

“The gym I’m in has a salt water pool and an ice cold plunge pool – you’ll find me there on a Sunday afternoon attempting to re-energise tired bones…”

What are you watching on Netflix at the moment?

“I was watching the second series of Narcos until my brother Chris changed the password on his account…he has decided that two years is too long for me to be ‘borrowing’ his subscription.”

Do you have an interest in style? What do you like to wear, off the pitch?

“I love to dress up but I rarely do from Monday to Friday….I cycle 5km to work so I’m a practical black jeans and boots kind of girl…When I dress up I am most confident wearing the colour red!”

Do you ever find it hard to marry the two- camogie and fashion?

“All the time. I was an avid stiletto wearer, the higher the better, but I ruptured my anterior cruciate ligament and can no longer wear my beloved heels…I’m still coming to terms with my loss.”

Any favourite fashion brands?

“I love Karen Millen – the pieces feel timeless and are always remarked upon when worn.”

Favourite quote that you live by?

“If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.”
