When I was younger, I thought there was nobody more fashionable than the French. I remember flipping through Elle, Marie Claire and Vogue… And loving all of the stunning coats, dresses, shoes and whatever else the top fashion designers in the world were showcasing. And though most of these pieces were way out of my price range and not exactly fit for everyday wear, I was inspired by the colors, fabrics and styling. My crush on French style turned into a serious love affair when I was lucky enough to spend a week in Paris this fall. As I sat in cafes and rode the metro, I couldn’t help but notice what everyone was wearing. Parisian women have this undeniably effortless style, and I tried to memorize as much as I could so I could mimic it with my wardrobe back home. Here’s what I came up with:

Winter Fashion Trends

Scarves

In Europe, scarves never seem to go out of style. Whether it’s spring, summer autumn or winter, scarves are forever in fashion. They come in all shapes, fabrics, colors and price points, but what struck me is how creative Parisians get when it comes to tying their scarves.  It’s time for me to put some of my own fabulous scarves to good use by learning new and different ways to tie them! Jewel Tones

Blacks, grays and neutral colors are still the favorites among trendy Parisians, but I did notice another trend popping up too – jewel tones. Colors like emerald green, ruby red, turquoise, magenta, sapphire, amber; these rich tones really made an outfit pop. They were usually found in accessories; fabulous handbags or a great pair of heels, but I really loved seeing them as a pair of tights with a black skirt, or in oversized earrings that demanded attention. Think about how you can get creative with some jewel tones!

Ponchos

You have no idea how happy I was to see that ponchos were alive and well in Paris, because I’ve always been a fan! I saw women wearing them in various fabrics and styles and they were in all the store windows. As the weather cooled down, I saw lots of ponchos in chunky knits and heavier wool materials – perfect for winter (I won’t even tell you how many made their way into my suitcase and into my closet!). Probably the best thing about ponchos, is that they flatter every shape and size, and you can dress them up with fab accessories or keep it casual with leggings and boots. This is one trend that I don’t want to see die.

Fur Trims

This is one of those ‘less is more’ fashion statements that Parisians seem to do so well. I saw touches of fur on ponchos, coats, boots, sweaters – even purses! When I got home, I immediately dug out my black cape that has a faux fur trim and put it into rotation for fall and winter. Entire fur coats can sometimes be “too much”, but little touches of fur can make a serious fashion statement without screaming for attention.

Over the Knee Boots

Boots are always a must for fall and winter, but this year I saw lots of boots that went over the knee, and it looked amazing. Whether over skinny jeans, leggings, or a short skirt, over-the-knee boots are a great way to show off your legs and also create the illusion of length. Heels or flats, there are many styles and they’re all edgy and fresh. Black or brown are always the best choice, so you can wear them with just about anything in your closet. This Winter Fashion Trends are all you need to be in style!

As Coco Chanel said, “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.” After a week in Paris, I can say that French women have this down pat. Classic, yet trendy; simple, yet sophisticated; understated, yet attention grabbing. The French can always be relied upon to be classy and fabulous!
