Velvet is the New Black

This year has been all about texture, and this season is no different. From the runways of Paris and New York, to the wardrobes of celebrities and style icons like Alexa Chung and Gigi Hadid, velvet has hit the ground running as the next big texture trend. Whether you're a neutral gal or a love a bright pop of colour, this trend is sure to satisfy, with a piece for every wardrobe.

While rocking a head-to-toe velvet jumpsuit seems pretty daunting, pairing your basics with velvet kitten heels or a choker can help you rock this trend without looking like an ad for Juicy Couture. With everyone from Balmain to Valentino, and even Jimmy Choo capitalising on this new trend, you know it's a big deal, but mastering this season's next big thing isn't as easy as Gigi Hadid makes it seem. Here are our top 3 tips for rocking the velvet trend:

Keep it simple. This seems like the top tip for everything, but when trying to pull-off a crazy trend like this, simplicity is key. Rocking a simple velvet dress is probably the most fool-proof option for this look, but if you're slightly more style-savvy, try adding a small element of the fabric to your outfit (chokers, shoes, scarves or a jacket are great options).

Colour is key. If you're a little worried about looking like a Juicy Couture model, choose your colour wisely. Bright colours like baby pink, or cornflower blue can appear cheap, tacky and a little over-the-top, so steer clear of these shades if you're less confident with your outfit choice. Darker natural tones like deep burgundy, khaki green or mustard yellow are great options for adding a more subtle pop of velvety colour to your look, obviously black and grey are always great choices too.

Overcrowding sucks, even in style. Like your favourite cafe on a Monday morning, bars, airports and shopping centres, overcrowded outfits are headache-causing and chaotic. When working with texture, keep your outfit as minimal as possible, like many of the images above. Avoid layering fabrics, and let your velvety pieces stand out and truly shine. Layering is great for simple, cotton-like fabrics with minimal texture, but can be over-the-top and chaotic when playing with complex fabrics like velvet.
