Anand Kulkarni is a New Zealand-based fashion and portrait photographer, and the man behind our May 2022 magazine cover, along with the makeup artist, Jodie Elizabeth.

The Team

For this shoot, my team and I wanted to create a vintage look. The editorial was a collaboration with Jodie Elizabeth, who is a talented Makeup Artist in Auckland, New Zealand. She specializes in bridal beauty, and did the hair and makeup for this shoot.

To create this retro aesthetic, we did it as a personal project, to explore something creative, and for our respective portfolios. We call this editorial ‘Retro Beauty’.

The Process

My makeup artist and I created a moodboard for what we wanted to achieve. We did a lot of research by looking at retro images for inspiration and creating a board on Pinterest. The makeup and look inspiration was provided by the makeup artist. The entire shoot took roughly 2 hours.

The muse is Matilda Foley, a fashion model from Auckland itself. She was selected by Jodie, the makeup artist, and is represented by N Management agency.

The Equipment

The camera I used for this editorial shoot was Canon 7D Mark II, with the lens Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro. For the lighting, we had backlight on a white wall. The key light was a 40cm beauty dish, and a reflector to fill shadows. Plus we used a softbox for rim light.
