Today, I’m writing about how to get long silky hair. Personally, I have had long hair since my childhood. And I also had my fair share of ups and downs with long hair. I have had the best moments when I had to flip my hair for pictures or look all glammed up while heading out to a party with my long locks. But real life isn’t a movie, right?! There are bad hair days, too! From frizzy hair to the flaky scalp to hair fall, I have dealt with it all. But with constant care both externally and internally, I have managed to maintain my long hair that’s super shiny and silky.

Haircare is something that has to be consistent just like your skincare or exercise routine. Right from your diet, lifestyle, sleep cycle, each and every small detail matters. Now, I’m not asking you to have a boring life, but I’m suggesting you be mindful of your choices. Have you noticed when you eat a lot of junk food, it shows up on your face in the form of acne or dry skin? Similarly, you may be experiencing hairfall or an itchy scalp. It’s all related to our well-being.

Instead of spending on external products, we can invest some time in natural home remedies and take care of our lifestyle. With the right kind of hair care, you can achieve luscious long silky hair. Let’s check out how to get long silky hair!

How to Grow Long Hair?

To get long silky hair, let’s understand the science behind hair growth. You’re born with all the hair follicles you’ll ever have — around 5 million to be exact, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). Of those, about 100,000 follicles are on your scalp. When it comes to losing hair, the AAD says it’s totally normal to lose about 50 to 100 hairs a day.

Also, according to healthline.com, “Hair grows from a root at the bottom of a follicle under your skin. The blood in your scalp goes to the follicle and supplies oxygen and nutrients to the hair root, which helps your hair grow.”

Factors Hair Growth Depends On

Hair growth also depends on factors like age, hair type, your health, and also hormones play a very important role. If you’re experiencing severe hair fall, visit a dermatologist to know the root cause of the problem. Also, your diet plays an important role in hair growth and even can reverse hair loss.

Tips to Get Long Silky Hair

To get long silky hair, you don’t have to invest a lot of money or time. It’s the small simple things that will add up to bigger things. Personally, I’m blessed with good genes, and I have long hair from a very young age. But like I mentioned earlier, I have suffered from hair problems like dandruff, hair fall, dryness, etc. Over time, I have realized that haircare and skincare depend on your overall health and lifestyle.

So, it’s essential to have a well-balanced diet, which promotes hair growth. After thorough research, I realized the importance of essential nutrients that are responsible for hair growth. We can’t change the factors like age or genes but diet is something that we can control.

Essential Nutrients for Hair Growth

Proteins are very essential for hair growth as hair follicles (structure in the outer layer of the skin where hair starts to grow) are made up of protein. I try to include eggs, berries, and soy products in my diet every alternative day.

Also, Vitamin C is essential that strengthens the hair by reducing hair fall. Personally, I try to include citrus fruits, avocado, broccoli in my diet, which has helped me with strong hair.

You should also know that each person is different. While it’s great to add these nutrients to your diet, it’s also important to know if your body is deficient in any nutrients by consulting a dermatologist or a nutritionist.

If you follow these tips regularly, you will see a considerable amount of change for sure. Here are a few tips in order to get long silky hair –

Oil your hair

Oiling your hair regularly promotes hair growth whereas dry scalp leads to hair fall. Apply any hair oil that’s suitable for your hair type on the scalp and massage it. Then leave it for a few hours or overnight and wash it off with a mild shampoo. Personally, I oil my hair once a week. It’s therapeutic as I massage my scalp with a combination of coconut oil, castor oil, and onion oil. You can choose the hair oil that suits you the best and apply it once or twice a week.

Also, try to apply serum to your hair after hair wash. You can use any serum that suits you. I have been using Moroccan oil, which is an excellent non-sticky greasy oil, which can be used as a serum, too. If you find these serums expensive, you can use olive oil or flaxseeds and essential oil mixture (boil flaxseeds with water and strain it) as serums, too!

Massage the scalp

Massaging the roots of your hair helps in blood circulation to the scalp, which helps in hair growth. You can massage your scalp when you oil your hair. Or you can massage with your fingertips without applying anything for a minute everyday, too.

Do not shampoo your hair too frequently

Shampooing your hair frequently will eventually lead to dry and frizzy hair. Also, excessive shampooing of hair makes your hair lose moisture and will be dehydrated. Try to minimize the usage of shampoos.

Try to use a mild shampoo that doesn’t lather much. Or you can use products that are paraben and sulfate-free, too. You can check out Shilpa’s haircare routine where she doesn’t shampoo her hair at all! But she uses other cleansers to keep her hair clean.

Brush your hair regularly

Brushing your hair is also an important step to get long silky hair. Brushing your hair helps to get rid of dirt and to remove tangles that keep your hair fresh and clean. This also helps in avoiding hair loss in the future.

You can try the backcombing method, too. You have to bend your head and put all your hair in the front and comb it from the back. This method helps in effective blood circulation that leads to hair growth. Try to backcomb before bed as it has the effects of a hair massage and it will help improve your sleep, too. You need to spend around 2-5 minutes and doesn’t take much of your time either.

Personally, I tried this method when I wanted to grow my hair. My hair grew from chest level to waist level in just 6 months.

Limit heat usage

If you’re dreaming to get long silky hair, try to limit heat usage. Whether it’s ironing, curling, or blow-drying, try to avoid it. Use only if you’re heading out to a party and if it’s really necessary. Heat styling your hair not only makes your hair dry and rough but also damages your hair including frizz and split ends, which will result in less hair growth. Also, before styling your hair, use a heat protectant serum or oil. This will reduce the amount of damage to the hair.

Try heatless hairstyles

Now, this is a cheat code that lets you style your hair and keep it damage-free. You can braid your hair before going to bed and the next morning you have soft curls when you open them. Or you can braid it after washing your hair, too, and leave it for two hours or so and you will end up with natural-looking curls. Try to sun dry your hair and apply a serum (you don’t have to invest in expensive ones, you can prepare yourself. Keep reading to know more!) for that natural look.

Maintain a good diet

As the saying goes, “You are what you eat”, your inside beauty matters for your outer beauty. Maintaining a well-balanced diet that includes fresh veggies and fruits, proteins and vitamins will not only help in hair growth but also improves the texture of the hair. Also, along with a healthy diet, stay hydrated. Drink atleast 8 glasses of water everyday and consume water-rich food like cucumber, tomatoes, oranges, etc.

Always wash your hair with cold or lukewarm water

One major reason for hair loss and poor hair growth is washing our hair with hot water. This results in loss of moisture and the essential oils from the hair. This also leads to frizzy hair and dehydrated. So, try to wash your hair with cold or lukewarm water.

Don’t expect an overnight change

Now that you’re sticking to a routine and taking care of your hair, do not expect any kind of change in a short period. You may experience the results very soon or after a month or even a year. Be patient and try out things that work for you as each one of us is different. Don’t be disheartened, try to figure out what works for you.

Reduce stress

If you eat well, hydrate well, and apply all good products but don’t have peace of mind then this shows up on your body as well. Maintain a healthy diet, eat well, hydrate yourself, exercise, and try to have an active lifestyle. Try meditating or yoga if you’re stressed.

Aloe Vera & Lemon Hair Mask

Aloe vera gel is a boon to humans. Why, you ask?! Well, this magic ingredient works well for all hair related issues. From dry scalp to dandruff to hair loss, this gel is a superhero. Personally, I’m a big fan of aloe gel, and very recently, I was suffering from a flaky scalp. And I discovered this magic home remedy from a friend and there’s no looking back. You need one or two medium-sized aloe vera leaves (use as per the length of your hair) and juice of one lemon.

Try to use natural plant gel over store-bought ones as they will have additives, no matter how organic they claim to be. Peel the outer part of the leaf and scoop the gel using a knife. It will be messy for first time users, but eventually, you will get used to it. Grind the gel along with lemon juice and apply it to your scalp and let it sit for 20 minutes. Later, wash it off with lukewarm water.

Then ta-da! Your hair is super silky, aloe vera gel promotes hair growth, lemon juice adds the shine. Also, if you tend to catch a cold quickly, I recommend using this mixture for 10 minutes, and please apply it when the sun is out. Due to the cooling effects of aloe vera, you may catch cold really quick.

Banana and Yogurt Hair Pack

One of the effective ways to get long silky hair is by using bananas on your hair. Even eating one banana a day results in great skin and hair. This is because of the rich potassium and calcium content of bananas. Yogurt is another natural smoothening agent for hair. Mash one ripe banana and mix half a cup of yogurt with it and apply it to your scalp. Let it sit for 30 minutes and wash it off.

This mixture is great for your skin, too. You can apply it if you tend to have dry skin.

Fenugreek Seeds Hair Pack

Fenugreek is known for its excellent health benefits. They are a rich source of iron and protein, which are essential for hair growth. To make this pack, soak 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds overnight. You can increase or decrease the quantity based on your hair length. You can strain the seeds and grind them thoroughly. Apply this to your scalp and let it sit for 20 minutes, then wash it off.

You can use the strained water as a conditioner after washing your hair. The fenugreek seed water is the magic ingredient that helps you get long silky hair. The mixture can be used on your skin, too!

Henna Pack

Henna is a well-known ingredient in any Indian house. Of course, one of the major ingredients during weddings or any other Indian function. It is known for its cooling effects and makes a great hair pack during summer to beat the heat. All you need is henna leaves or henna powder (store-bought) and 2 tablespoons of yogurt. You can use the leaves or powder based on your hair length. Mix the ingredients and let it stay overnight if you want to color your hair. Or you can apply it immediately and let it sit for 30 minutes. Later, wash it off!

Henna promotes hair growth and also prevents hair thinning. Yogurt makes your hair shiny. You can also add strained tea water or beetroot juice if you want to try different hair colors.

Avocado

Avocados are a rich source of potassium and magnesium that helps hair to look smooth and shiny. Mash half an avocado, add 1 tablespoon of honey and 2 tablespoons of yogurt. You can also add a few drops of coconut or olive oil, too, for extra nourishment. Apply this mixture to your hair and let it sit for 20 minutes and wash it off. This is one of the best hair masks to get long silky hair. You can use this mixture on your face as well.

Whenever I’m preparing a dish with avocado, I keep half of it aside for my hair and skin.

Oatmeal Hair Pack

Oatmeal is a great breakfast option. They are a great source of iron, fiber, and zinc that promotes hair growth. It also soothes an itchy scalp and moisturizes your hair. Grind a cup of oatmeal into a fine powder, add half a cup of milk or yogurt and one tablespoon of honey. Apply this mixture to your hair and face, leave it for 20 minutes then wash it off.

DISCLAIMER: *Always do a patch test of the above hair masks. You may be allergic to any ingredient. So, please conduct a patch test on your wrist, and if you see no allergic reaction within 24 hours, then apply on scalp. In case of a reaction, consult your dermatologist immediately.
*Do not leave the mask for more than 30 minutes and with yogurt and egg whites, the odor may stay until your next hair wash. So, you can double shampoo to get rid of the smell.
