In the last couple of years you may have heard the term ‘body positivity’ used a lot in the press, here at Voodoo Vixen HQ we are passionate about every Body type being included, feeling welcomed and working towards inclusivity for all in the future.
Body positivity is unlearning the idea that is portrayed by the media and in wider society that there are certain types of bodies that are ideal. These bodies that are seen as ideal are therefore often seen as the only type of body shape that is worthy of respecting, receiving praise and representation. The body positivity movement aims to recognize that actually all bodies are of the same worth. You deserve to exist in your body without the prejudice of anyone else and there is not one ideal body type.
We understand that as humans we will be affected by the world around us and we will have days when we don’t feel so great about our bodies. However the body positivity movement is about understanding that this is ok and happens to everyone at some point. Being body positive isn’t easy it takes work to consciously love all parts of yourself including the parts you may not like.
It helps to focus on the parts of your body you do like, pick five parts of your body and think carefully why you like them, this reinforces the positives about your own body. When you think about the negative parts of your body you need to also think if it was for example your best friend’s body would you compliment them on the parts of their body you like or point out things you believe to be flaws? You would always be positive and let them know how wonderful they are to you, so why are you being so negative about yourself, treat your body like it is your best friend. Remember as well to recognise the amazing things your body can do and does without you thinking about it, it sees colours, processes language and lets you feel a range of emotions, the human body truly is a wonderful thing. If you truly believe there are parts of your body you can’t learn to love then it is important for you to accept them and make peace, this will help over time.
The main point about body positivity is that it is for everyone, whatever shape or size, everyone is invited. Loving you own body isn’t vain and accepting and being happy with your own body is only ever a positive thing.
Being body positive also isn’t reserved for accepting your own body, it is about embracing everyone else and what comes with that is never shaming any other body type. Body shaming is never acceptable and not justified when dealing with someone that is body shaming.
We should all be working towards a society where you are not judged by your size and every type of body is equally represented in the media because there should not be an ideal body shape. We still have a long way to go with equal representation in the media however it is important for fashion companies like ourselves to be body inclusive, our clothes are for everyone and that is something we wish to continue working towards.
