Pregnancy rates in the UK

In 2022 the number of viable pregnancies (birth rate) per 1000 women was 11.32 while in 2021 the rate was 0.48% higher with 11.37 viable pregnancies per 1000 women. This shows a decrease in the birth rate.

However, the pregnancy rate tells a different story with an increase from the previous year of 0.06%. In 2022 the pregnancy rate was 1.753 children per woman while in 2021 this read as 1.752.

With the infant mortality rate in constant decline, we can assume that the reason the birth rate is higher is that, unlike the fertility rate, it accounts for women of all ages. The fertility rate only takes into account women aged between 15 and 44.

The higher birth rate includes women who choose to give birth when they are older than 44 and the underage pregnancies that have been reported.

What is a trimester?

The length of pregnancy is usually 9 months, and a trimester is a period of three months. So the term ‘first trimester’ makes referral to the first three months of pregnancy and so on.

As the mother transitions through the trimesters, the size of the Baby may make the mother struggle to do normal tasks, or just generally feel uncomfortable, as well as manifesting cravings etc.

• There is no need to gift bedding items such as heavy blankets, pillows or duvets for a newborn; these put the baby at risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), so they should never be placed inside a cot or Moses basket.
• If you are gifting a second-hand item, make sure it is safe, as used items may present a danger for a newborn baby.

An example of this is a used car seat that hasn’t been stored correctly or cleaned since it was last used, this lack of cleaning can lead to a buildup of dust and mould which can be harmful to anyone, especially newborns.
