Stretch marks | What can you do to help avoid them?

Stretch marks have been a part of life for a very long time – records of them date back to the ancient Greeks and Romans who even had simple remedies to help them.

Stretch marks are lines or streaks across the skin. They can be pink, red, brown, black, silver or purple. They tend to start off dark and then fade over time. Stretch marks are most common on the stomach, but can appear on the chest, upper arms, bottom and hips. During pregnancy, they can appear on the stomach but also on the thighs and breasts. They are really common during pregnancy and affect eight out of 10 pregnant women

Stretch marks happen when the middle layer of skin (the dermis) becomes stretched and broken in places. This is usually caused by sudden growth or weight gain, especially pregnancy.

Hormonal changes in pregnancy can effect your skin and make you more likely to get stretch marks.

Early on stretch marks can feel slightly raised and might be itchy. They are not harmful but there is no specific treatment for them. There is no sure way to prevent stretch marks completely, but here are some ways to help:.

Collagen helps keep skin strong and elastic. Vitamin C helps the body develop collagen, so getting plenty of vitamin C should help. Recent research has suggested that Vitamin D may also reduce the risk of stretch marks.
