Can I Swim and Workout With Hair Extensions?

The summer season brings on a whole new set of pleasures and challenges. This is especially true when talking about your Hair. For one thing, it’s sometimes easier to be a little casual in the summer with your hair styles. Just throw it up in a top knot and go, right? What about making your Hair Extensions look their best for all those fun summer parties you want to go to? Can you even swim with those things? Let’s talk about the wear and tear your hair extensions might experience during those specific summer months by answering three important questions for you about your gorgeous hair extensions from Glo Denver Salon.

Question #1: Can I swim with my hair extensions?

There are three main types of hair extensions, tape-in, fusion, and clip-in that we offer at Glo Extensions Denver Salon. Let’s talk about the first two types. The hair itself with tape-in or fusion isn’t going to be affected by the water or the chemicals in the swimming pool. What you do have to worry about is the bonds that create the hair extensions in the first place.

Those bonds can be affected by the chemicals in the pool and also by the lotions you may have on your skin. You can swim with either of these types of hair extensions, but ideally you don’t want to be underneath the water for too long, so that the bonds get oversaturated. A little water is okay, too much and you might damage the bonds causing pieces to fall out. So just be careful in the water or wear a swim cap if you are going to be swimming laps for exercise.

With fusion or tape-ins that get wet, you want to rinse and dry the bonds as soon as possible once you get out of the pool. This will prevent the glue or tape from becoming too damaged and compromising the look of your beautiful long extensions.

As far as clip-ins go, for our Bellami Hair Extensions, it’s not recommended that you swim with them, unless you pile your hair on top of your head and don’t get it wet at all. The water can make your clip-in hair extensions become tangled up with your own hair creating a mess to take care of later when you get out. The best bet with clip-ins is to enjoy the water poolside, but leave your hair out of the pool.

Question #2: Is working out a problem with hair extensions?

Many people want to work out or play sports with their hair extensions, especially during the warm summer months. You can work out, go to the gym, and do all your normal activities with hair extensions that are tape-in or fusion. Just tie them into a loose braid or high ponytail, so that they don’t get so sweaty and tangled during your workouts. This is what you would normally do with your own natural hair when working out, so it’s not really that different.

With clip-ins, it’s important that you take them out before working out. They will last longer and won’t get sweaty during your workouts. Plus, they are easy to put in and remove, so you really don’t have any excuse for taking them out pre-workout.

Question #3: What about the beach?

It’s essentially the same advice as the pool. Just make sure that you wash and dry your extensions with a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner set, after you indulge in those glorious waves at the beach. Then brush out your extensions as soon as possible with the right brush, especially made for your hair extensions. Tangles are the biggest problem at the beach when the wind kicks up on the shores blowing your hair around in the summer breeze. You can always prevent this problem completely by wrapping your hair up in a chic scarf that matches your cute coverup and bathing suit.

An active lifestyle shouldn’t be a problem with hair extensions. As long as you treat them the right way, you’ll be able to have gorgeous long hair throughout the summer.
