Allergic Reaction to Cosmetic Chemicals

We don't always look at the Ingredients that are put into our make up, but they can in fact cause damage to our skin.

I completed my accredited make up artistry course on the weekend, which was an absolute blast. I decided to study this so I can earn some extra cash on weekends doing bridal and formal make up. I learnt so much and the looks I recreated were phenomenal.

The instructor was also amazing. She has been a make up artist for 25 years and I learnt so much from her, however she makes her own products and something in these products clearly didn't agree with me.

Unfortunately I had an immense allergic Reaction to the products used. I trialled some of the new looks using her make-up on the Sunday night and woke up to a bright red, blown up face on Monday. I couldn't even open my eyes and the itch and burning was intolerable. I've always had slightly sensitive skin; I've had reactions to eye shadow and lipstick before, but never to this degree. It was obvious that the make up was the culprit because there were huge red burning streaks on my cheeks where I'd applied bronzer and highlighter.

I have been prescribed antihistamines, antibiotics and steroids to try and calm the reaction. It's been 5 days since I used the product and the swelling and redness is still very prominent. I've missed an entire week of work, which is not ideal at all.

It's very strange because I practiced with this make up on several friends and my cousin and it didn't seem to affect them at all.

I love make up so much, but this experience has turned me off wanting to wear it for a while. My skin feels like scales and I look like a monster in the mirror right now.

I obviously have to make sure I'm extremely stringent in checking the ingredients of my make up moving forward as I cannot afford for this to happen again. I'm also really interested in getting a full allergy test done.

Has anyone experienced a severe reaction like this before? Do you know of any particular ingredients that have caused something like this? I'm interested in hearing about other people's experiences. I wouldn't wish this on any of you!

xx Lola
