Instagram Themes - Yay or Nay?

I Love Instagram and absolutely love using it to share photos of my life online. However recently, I've been conflicted as to whether I should be working towards a theme or not, so I wanted to share my views.

I've been thinking a lot recently about having an Instagram Theme and what it means to have an Instagram theme. Now, I'm in digital marketing and I've given talks about branding and marketing, so you don't need to tell me how important it is to have a consistent brand that you can be recognised by. I'd like to think that by looking at my blog, my Pinterest and my Twitter, you'd probably start to gather that I have a thing for pastels. Pastels are my absolute favourite and if everything I owned could be pastel, that would be awesome.

However, if you look at my Instagram theme, this probably doesn't come across at all. My Instagram is a wild mix of colours, themes and ideas and honestly, I'm not sure how to feel about it. On the one hand, when I first decided to write about this topic, I wanted to talk about the fact that I didn't think having an Instagram theme was important for me personally. I wanted to focus on the fact that I use Instagram to share my life and my life doesn't always fit into this perfect pastel theme and if I loved something, I was going to share it anyway, whether it fit into the theme or not.

After thinking about it and putting on my digital marketing hat, I knew that the only way to really brand yourself and your social media was to put across a consistent image and for me, that is the pastel colours that I share on here and my other platforms.

I've been having a real conflict about this since then and have been thinking about it a lot which is what has really caused this post to come alive. On the one side, I would love to have a perfect theme, with gorgeous pastel pinks, greens and blues combined with glitter, Disney and cute things that make me smile. For me, Instagram is an online diary of all the things that I love and it'd be great if all of those things were pastel. However, they aren't. Some days, I want to wear all black. Others, I want to wear all bright colours. Both of these things are a part of who I am and considering this entire blog is me, my branding should be that as well.

I don't want to feel like I'm tailoring my life online and only showing the gorgeous pastel parts when really, life is so much more than those small pieces that I love. It is made up of lots of pieces, all as important as the last, representing my various hobbies, loves and desires, even if they don't all fit into the pastel aesthetic that I might choose my Instagram to display.

So I guess what I'm saying is that although I would love to have an Instagram theme, one of those that paints my life to be a perfect pastel haven, I just don't think that is me. For me, personally, my life is so much more than that and I want my online photo diary to represent all parts of me, not just the parts that yearn for everything pastel. I mean, I am trying to get my theme together and post some sort of collection of images, but I guess I also won't not post something that doesn't fit into my theme. I'm trying to find that balance between the two - hopefully I can pull it off!
