The holidays are over and we’ve reached the less fun part of the winter journey. It’s cold, dark, and grey, the sun sets early, and without any holidays or festive events to look forward to it can feel like a long stretch of not-very-scenic Arctic highway. These are the months when we crave comfort until that first sign of spring.
Despite being the season of comfort, where we get to bundle up in our favorite cozy sweaters, get maximum use out of all the stylish boots we’ve accumulated, and easily get out of plans because it’s just too cold we still must carry on. We need to continue to be functioning and contributing members of society who go to work, maintain responsibilities, tend to friendships and family commitments, and more. We can’t hibernate like bears even though we want to. We need to figure out how to slog through the cold, grey, bleakness of winter.
COMFORTABLE SWEATER LOOKS FOR THE WORKPLACE
I am in the fortunate position where I rarely need to leave my home. The majority of my work now happens virtually and it’s amazing. Sure, I may be a candidate for rickets, but at least I don’t have to endure an uncomfortable commute that is equally freezing and frustrating. However, for those who commute—even if it is a few days a week— to an office I can only imagine that the desired goal when it’s cold and bleak is to do it with maximal comfort while still looking professional. You may want to throw on the oversized sweater that Grandma knitted for you over a decade ago and pair it with fleece-lined joggers, but as that’s hardly an option, I decided to create looks that captured both comfort and professionalism. I styled outfits using sweaters and easy-on comfortable Pants that look like work pants but wear like pants you would wear to do a long weekend Netflix binge. OUTFIT #1
This comfortable and soft cotton, cashmere sweater from Capsule 121 is cozy and warm but not too warm for overheated workplaces. It’s also an easy basic that can be styled in a variety of ways. In this look, I styled it with pull-on pintuck pants in navy from Vince, slate flats from M.Gemi, and a labradorite aquamarine and gold beaded Necklace from Deborah Grivas.
OUTFIT #2
For those blazer-required days where you just can’t, I used this sweater blazer from J.Crew. Layered underneath, I used this slim, ribbed turtleneck from M.M. Lafleur, and belted the sweater jacket with this belt from Ada. The look is paired with these faux leather leggings from Spanx, molten u-drop earrings from Anthropologie, and black suede Chelsea boots from Margaux.

This cozy turtleneck from dh New York hits that sweet spot of being professional enough in appearance for work while still having a relaxed and comfortable vibe. I styled it with graphite pull-on dream pants from Everlane. For a pop, I added these patent lug sole loafers from M.Gemi and finished the look with silver threader earrings from Quince.

For a more casual workplace, I layered a chambray shirt under this colorful striped Breton sweater from White + Warren. I styled the look with navy pull-on pants from J.Crew Factory and finished the look with Veja sneakers, a triple-beaded chain necklace from Monica Vinader, and hoop earrings from Jenny Bird.
OUTFIT #5
If layering just feels like too much work, a sweater-shirt combo, like this one from Brochu Walker, achieves a professional look with less. You just pop it on and look like done. Everybody likes one-and-done options when it’s too miserable outside to care. I styled this sweater with forest green pull-on crepe pants from Eileen Fisher and finished the look with taupe weatherproof Aquatalia booties (because the only thing worse than cold weather is cold, wet feet), a leaf pendant from Anabel Aram, and simple studs by Oradina.
JUST HANG IN THERE
Cold, winter weather is temporary and a time of year we just have to power through. If we can do it with both comfort and style, perhaps these final months of cold temperatures won’t feel as terrible.
