FEATHERS FOR THE HOLIDAYS: ADDING FEATHERS TO YOUR FESTIVE OUTFITS

It’s not uncommon for our clients to ask for help putting looks together during the holidays. This year, if a client came to me for Holiday styling it was pretty much a guarantee I was going to present a few options that included Feathers. I guess I’m just in a feather mood this holiday season and it seems my clients are too. There wasn’t one client, even the ones I was convinced would tell me I was nuts, who didn’t embrace them. Feathers just feel right and it seems my feeling is right on target. They are just about everywhere this season.

I’m not sure what it is about feathers. Done wrong, they can look tacky, cheap, and, let’s face it, a bit bordello, but when feathers are done well and in the right amount, they are trendy yet chic, elegant yet playful, and very feminine. I think for someone like myself, who isn’t drawn toward overly ornate or embellished elements but who is looking for something a bit more festive, feathers achieve this.

How far someone leans into wearing feathers is entirely personal but if I could offer a little advice, less is usually more when it comes to wearing them. Even something as simple as feather embellishments on shoes or a feather handbag can be all you need. Want more? One feather element in an outfit is plenty. Looking for some ideas? Take a look at the outfits I put together.

OUTFIT #1

When putting some holiday looks together, I pulled these pieces together and this was the second time I selected these feather slingback pumps from Sam Edelman. They come in a variety of colors and, from client reports, are quite comfortable. In this look, the shoes are the showstopper so I used this top and pants, both from Chiara Boni la Petite Robe, and finished the look with this tearose-colored bag from Loeffler Randall, and sparkly earrings and necklace from J.Crew.

OUTFIT #2

I think for a great deal of the population getting super dressed up over the holidays doesn’t happen. Perhaps just a sweater or top and nice pants are enough, maybe someone wants to look festive without going all out. A sweater with feather detailing, like this one from Kobi Halperin, hits that sweet spot. Plus, when it’s sharply styled with faux leather pants, a pair of black booties, like this pair from Veronica Beard, an envelope clutch, and bold earrings, it’s an updated look that says festive holidays. This outfit would also be fantastic for a New Year’s Eve celebration.

OUTFIT #3

There is something so perfect about mixing velvet and feathers in one look. I styled this feathered blouse from J.Crew with a pair of deep green velvet pants from L’Agence. I finished the look with a pair of gold-heeled sandals from Margaux, a gold mesh clutch, and multi-ring drop earrings.

OUTFIT #4

A client is wearing this velvet jumpsuit from Reiss to an upcoming holiday party and what is perfect about it is it comes in petite. My client isn’t necessarily petite, as in short, but she has a super short torso which makes it hard for her to find dresses that fit her properly. Petite cuts shorter in places like the torso which made this jumpsuit perfect for her. With the jumpsuit, she will be carrying this feather clutch from Ola Berg. My client chose different shoes, but when I found this pair of floral applique gold sandals I had to use them. For a finish, I added this bracelet and linear earrings, both from Swarovski.

OUTFIT #5

I selected this dress from Aiden Mattox as one of the options for a client who always wears dresses for the holidays. The feather details on the sleeves take this relatively simple dress and make it look more festive without going over the top. The look is finished with a pair of black suede boots from Boden, a pair of large crystal hoops from Gas Bijoux, a simple station necklace from Kate Spade, and a clover clutch from Maje.
