It’s time for the sale of the year, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, which dates back to the early 1960s with Nordstrom’s acquisition of Best Apparel, which had been running an “anniversary” sale since the mid-1940s. Nordstrom adapted the formula of the sale, extended it, and added early access to cardholders.
Employing a smart retail strategy, Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale is usually their biggest volume sale of the year. Where normally July is the most snoozy month for shopping due to the fact that most retailers are looking to turnover summer merchandise to make room for the upcoming season, which means a lot of picked-over items, the Anniversary Sale is different and has yet to be copied by other retailers. The sale racks up new and upcoming merchandise for the event before other retailers get their hands on them which adds to the fun while the exclusivity element that allows cardholders to shop first, adds to the excitement. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale isn’t just a sale, it’s an event.
WHEN CAN YOU SHOP?
Well, this all depends on your status as a Nordstrom shopper. If you are an icon, you can start on July 11th and if you aren’t a cardholder you’ll have to wait until July 17th.
Here is a breakdown of when you can shop shopping:
- Icon Status: Must reach a minimum of $15,000 net spend on qualifying items at Nordstrom locations using a Nordstrom card.
- Ambassador Status: Must reach a minimum of $5,000 net spend on qualifying items at Nordstrom locations.
- Influencer Status: entry level for a Nordstrom cardmember who spends less than $5,000 net on qualifying items at Nordstrom locations.

I took some time to scan all the women’s items that will be available for the launch of the sale. As much as I appreciate the strategy of this sale, while I think there are some great deals and some fabulous things, to me, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale has lost a bit of its luster. It’s still a great event but I can remember a time when I got more excited about the sale items featured. For the past few years, this must-have feeling just isn’t there for me any longer. I might pick up something here or there but may also save my budget for Amazon’s Prime Day which also starts on the 11th.

No doubt, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is fun, especially if you shop responsibly. Sales historically drive up sales for the retailer and tamper down common sense for the shopper and are caused by things like fear of missing out which can trigger a sense of missing the boat, causing us to act on impulse, present bias which is when see buying items at discounted prices as a reward that overshadows saving for the future or hitting a financial target, and something called a cluster effect which is where we make decisions that have been subconsciously influenced by others, discarding our own judgment. Don’t let this sale cost you more money than the amount you wind up saving.
