FACEBOOK GROUP MEMBER OF THE MONTH: SANDY KLAR

I have a feeling that if Sandy, this month’s member of the month, lived in the same city as me we’d totally be friends. Not only does Sandy have great style, but she’s also strong, independent, sassy, and very funny. These are my Women.

Sandy first jumped onto my radar screen when I noticed the backdrop of her home and really liked her decor. I don’t just appreciate’s Sandy’s personal style, she has a great eye for home decor as well.

I loved getting to know Sandy and her style better, and I am sure you will too. Hey, Sandy. The next time you’re in NYC, let’s go out and get some mugshots. 😉

Name: Sandy Klar

Location: San Francisco, CA

Age: 57

Q: What do you like most about being a member of Bridgette’s Facebook Group?

A: I really enjoy the women! I love the brutal (yet kind) honesty of it all. Plus it always is so great when Bridgette chimes in. The group is a mix of so many different kinds of women, styles, ideas, and sharing—I have learned so much! There’s a lot of humor too—it’s a fun group!

Q: The biggest benefits you have received from being a Group member

A: Hi, my name is Sandy, and I am addicted to M.Gemi.

Srsly–I have learned about so many brands I either never heard of or just didn’t think about. That, along with photos of people and what they wear. I also love when people post photos and ask for opinions on what looks better on them. I read all the responses, and I love the thoughtful and honest ways people critique. It doesn’t ever feel mean.

Q: What would you tell women who haven’t joined The Group yet?

A: Do it—it’s like a Pinterest Board with feedback! I have 2 friends in a WhatsApp chat group and we send our Fashion photos and questions to each other, we call it Fashion Police. Like that! But bigger and better and with an actual SYTLIST!

Q: How would you describe your style?

A: Simple, casual, classic? I am sometimes all over the place but I feel best in simple comfortable clothes that are classic but with a bit of modern in them.

Q: How did you discover your style?

A: So–I spent a lot of time shopping for a 5’10”, skinny woman, with long legs, and big boobs. I am 5’4″, pleasingly plump(ish), small boobed, short-waisted…but I did get the long legs right! I had a frustrating time, especially when menopause hit, accepting my changing body and lifestyle. I spent a lot of time shopping for what I wished I looked like.

I have always loved simple elegant styles and have finally figured out what I like—mostly—I still get it wrong quite a bit. I find if I keep it simple and neat, I feel good. Jeans, shirts and blouses, a jacket, and cute flats. I am not trying to be anyone but me these days and that feels really good.

Q: What advice do you have for others trying to find their style?

A: Have fun! I love putting together costumes and dressing up for Halloween. I find that when I approach my clothes that way and just enjoy the process of putting outfits together—I end up with some really cute looks and the fun I had comes through. Trial and error is okay—don’t be too hard on yourself.

Q: What fashion issues are you currently struggling with?

A: I do fine with my daily outfits—I struggle with dressing up for events sometimes. Especially since I don’t go to so many. I have solved some of that by having cute, dressy separates I can mix and match. But it would be nice to find some flattering dresses I feel good in. I have one I love but I have worn it to bits!

I don’t have much of a waist so I tend to feel frumpy in dresses—I feel GREAT in pants outfits though!

Q: What are the most versatile items you have in your closet?

A: Jeans—I have so many jeans in every wash, length, and leg cut—I wear them for everything! Dressy or casual.

And scarves–did you know scarfs is also a correct plural? I just learned that. I have many patterned ones and love how they perk up an outfit by adding softness and color.

Q: If you could go back and change the way you dressed in the past, what would you change?

A: I would be kinder to myself. No one cares…go enjoy the fashion and love yourself and be kind.

The punk phase maybe I could have done without.

Q: Is there a fashion purchase you made that you found more useful than you thought it would be?

A: A shacket! My cousin gave me one and I ended up buying 2 more! I live in San Francisco where you have to dress like an artichoke—layers of clothes that you can take off or add on. These jackets add a cute layer that is much dressier than I thought! Though I bought an olive green one and when I showed up at an outdoor concert with a hat—-my friend said—hey! You look like Smokey the Bear. GAH!

It was hilarious, and I DID! “Only YOU can prevent forest fires!”

Q: What about a fashion purchase that you thought would solve all your problems, but didn’t?

A: A kimono thingy, the flowy ones thrown over an outfit. I love it on other women but on me, it does not work—I get tangled up with my bag and it feels a mess. Or that I might read your fortune at any given moment!

Q: How do you envision yourself when you look your best?

A: Ease. That is the ultimate for me—when I am so comfortable and feel good that I move through with ease. I love looking at women in life who look so comfortable in themselves and so easy with their fashion and how they flow through the world.

Q: What are your biggest fashion goals for the year?

A: To clean out my closet and populate it (not overly) with things I love and will wear! Right now it is SO crowded and full of things I don’t wear, don’t fit, or no longer fit my life. Plus I love clean and organized—and it is not.

My Aunt recently fell and broke her hip—she is 87 and the most elegant person I know. Anyway—I had to go to her house and get some things for her to wear. I went into her closet and easily found things that would work for the hospital or rehab and keep her looking nice. If someone had to do that for me, lord knows what I would look like! 👀

Time to fix it!

Q: What is the best fashion advice you ever received?

A: 1) My Aunt told me to buy quality. And I have wonderful pieces because of her advice. It looks great, feels great, and lasts a long time.

2) Bridgette posted about her visits to Frank at the hospital and how she made an effort to dress nicely. That stuck with me and here I am in that position. Dressing nicely and comfortably to go to the rehab facility every day does a few things—I feel good. The effort I took to fix myself up makes me feel capable and strong. The effort I take also translates to people treating me better and listening to me (I feel anyway). It works for my Aunt too—every day she dresses up and the nurses actually come to see what her fashion is that day!

Q: The first thing you take off when you get home?

A: It takes a sec to get to it, but my bra. I change to comfy at home clothes—cute joggers and a soft hoodie.

Q: Favorite color(s) to wear

A: I have a few–I wear black a lot, I love blue (navy mostly), but wear a lot of tan, maroon, and olive.

Q: Favorite stores to shop?

A: M.Gemi, Birdies, J Crew, Mango, Uniqlo, Everlane, and Naadam for cashmere, Loft, or Ann Taylor (though less so since I work at home full time)

…and Costco (hehe) I do find some cute things there! Hunter boots! A Pendleton jacket!

Q: What makes you happiest?

A: Time with family. I am so far from my parents who are in the Philippines where I grew up. I use all my vacations to go see them (I’ve managed a few trips to other places too—but mostly, there). I had a friend ask me recently why I don’t travel more often—I am, after all, single and relatively carefree. I just feel like these people—my parents and Aunts in their 80s and 90s—are important to me and I have limited time with them. If I don’t see some places in my lifetime, I will be ok. But I will lose them one day and I will never regret prioritizing time with them. I also have brothers and loads of cousins I adore!

Time with friends. Having sustaining friendships is amazing. I feel so lucky to have such a great group of kind, smart, generous people. I have old and new friends—some going back to kindergarten and some as new as 3 years and all ages. It’s so wonderful to connect with people.

Time making art or creating. Probably the only time that everything fades away and I am completely present. Doesn’t even matter what it is or if anyone ever sees it. :)

Q: What inspires you?

A: Connection. To people, to nature, to my surroundings. I love to observe and find and notice little things that are beautiful, funny, or interesting. I have a childlike joy in these things and get truly excited!

Q: What inspires you?

A: Connection. To people, to nature, to my surroundings. I love to observe and find and notice little things that are beautiful, funny, or interesting. I have a childlike joy in these things and get truly excited!

Q: Use One Word to Describe Your Style

A: Casual Elegant
