One of the posts I like to share is the use of Photography as an inspiration for putting looks together. It has been a while since I shared one of these types of posts, so I thought it would be fun to roll one out and, of course, tie it into a contest that gives you the opportunity to create a look using photography too.

If you recall one of the dressing strategies I coined a few years ago, using photography to create a look is not unlike Road Map Styling, which you can read more about here. Road Map styling means using something like a print to help inform you of the colors you can combine. Like a print, photography can serve the same purpose by showing you color combinations you might not have considered on your own. I have taken five photographs and built five different looks using the colors in the photo as my guide. Let’s take a look.

USING PHOTOGRAPHY AS INSPIRATION FOR BEAUTIFUL LOOKS

OUTFIT #1

This is a gorgeous photo of the Montaña de Siete Colores, or the Rainbow Mountain, in the Peruvian Andes of Cusco. How often can nature inspire stripes like this?

It immediately reminded me of this Weekend Max Mara cotton striped sweater that a client recently purchased so I decided to build the look using it. In fact, I wondered if Max Mara wasn’t also inspired by this mountain. I styled the look with a pair of casual Alex Mill pants in a vintage olive shade and completed the look with a cobalt bag from Leatherology, a bone-colored belt from FRAME, and loafers from Naturalizer.

OUTFIT #2

This photo is part of an award-winning series of photos, called Dorf— German for village. The houses in this series are located in Croatia in an area where German colonists made the largest impact, you can read more about the photos here) I was inspired by the colors found in the deterioration of these homes, particularly the layers of green and the juxtaposition of the red in this photo.

I styled this cashmere cardigan in slate green from J.Crew with a washed tan tee from Ann Taylor and a grey-green pair of trousers from Theory. I finished the look with a moss-shaded necklace from Alona, a hunter green handbag from Mark & Graham, and for the punch of color, these rusty red pumps from Donald Pliner.

OUTFIT #3

Tom Price won an award in 2021 for this photo from his series of images of porters from the shopping district of Bara Bazar, India. You can view more of these astounding photos, here. The pink in this particular photo jumped out at me and I knew I had to use it.

I captured that purplish pink using this BOSS blazer that I styled with a striped shirt from Frank & Eileen. I needed to find a blue that worked with the shade of the blazer without being too jarring and found this slate color, which captures the sky, to be perfect. I styled the rest of the look with off-white pants from Club Monaco and used the handbag from Cuyana and the mushroom-colored flats from M.Gemi to capture the rugged terrain. The look is finished with a layered necklace from Ettika.

OUTFIT #4

This intriguing photo titled The Sacred Garden is another award-winning photo that features the chapel of St Cwyfan in Anglesey, Wales. Despite this chapel being photographed many times, it’s the difficult-to-achieve aquatic perspective Eaton captured that made this photo so intriguing.

I had to try and capture these colors in a cohesive way, which can be tricky when pairing deep aquatic greens with soft blue greys. I styled this chartreuse dress from The Fold with this rich sage blazer from Hobbs to create a tonal look where the chartreuse could also pop off the deep blazer color. I finished the outfit with these periwinkle pumps from M.Gemi and this taupe bag from Demellier.

OUTFIT #5

If it seems like there is no way the colors in this photo could exist in nature, you’re right. Photographer Auden Johnson captured this photo using infrared photography. I’m not enough of a camera nerd to understand all of this completely, but I found this photo in this post if you are a hobbyist photographer.

The photo is just so cool to look at and I thought the colors would make an amazing look. I styled this rose pink cardigan with a pair of slim pants in mink, both from M.M. Lafleur, and a minty green blouse from Ann Taylor. The look is finished with oyster-colored loafers, a blush belt from J.Crew, a blush bag from Quince, and a pink Swarovski pendant.
