Anneli Bush - A Life & Style Diary

My hair and I go a long way back. We´ve been through the lot. Bleached, purple, red, orange, ombré, short, long… Finally, now that I´ve come to my senses – I´m back to my chocolate brown roots (with a touch of sun kissed from all my recent escapades). But my hair has never really recovered from all the wear and tear… Until, I dissevered this hair mask.

When I was younger, my hair used to be so thick, with a slight wave and shiny dark brown. Basically, I would do anything to have my old hair back. But sadly, I still have a long way to go, to get that real thickness and natural bounce back… That´s not to say my hair is a total lost cause. I, as everyone else, have good (and bad) hair days. Sometimes it just works, and otherwise, it falls flat. But ever since I stopped putting bleach on my tresses, doing regular hair treatments, using good quality serums and oils, and getting it trimmed every 8-10 weeks, it´s finally going somewhere – in terms of length, thickness and gloss.

AVOCADO, COCONUT OIL, HONEY & CINNAMON HAIR MASK

…and one of the main reasons for that, is this DIY hair mask. Which ever since I concocted it together a while back, and started using it once a week – my hair has been so much healthier and easier to handle. As much as I am a big fan of Kerastasé, SP and other iconic hair mask brands – you can’t really beat natural and whole ingredients for your hair. It gives it a completely different type of shine and look, and I promise you, once you start with this one, there is no going back… Why?

Avocado is one of the best ingredients you can put in your hair; with the same fats and oils being so amazing for your body – it makes an equally solid option to really help repair dry, brittle and damaged hair.

Coconut Oil not only leaves your hair so silky smooth, it´s also a great, natural way to help your hair grow longer, thicker, and faster. The vitamins and essential fatty acids naturally found in coconut oil nourish the scalp and help to remove sebum build-up from hair follicles.

Honey is packed with vitamins, minerals, is antibacterial, attracts moisture and retains hair-strengthening properties. It also contains natural antioxidants, which helps make your scalp healthy and also stimulates hair growth, as well as adding a beautiful sheen to the overall result.

Cinnamon (when combined with honey) can really help stimulate the scalp and the circulation to the skin, therefore improves the flow of nutrient-rich blood to the hair follicles.

INGREDIENTS
Makes enough for shoulder-length hair (double it for longer hair)

1/2 avocado, 1 tbsp coconut oil, 1 tbsp honey & 1tsp cinnamon

TOOLS

Bowl and a fork (or a blender), hair clips (for longer hair), a shower cap, a hair dryer (or a sunny day) & a hair brush/comb

DIRECTIONS

1. In a small mixing bowl, add in the avocado, coconut oil, honey and cinnamon. Mix it all together using a fork, or a hand held blender.
2. Apply it to clean and damp hair, making sure your hair is free from any tangles (ideally give it a soft brush before hand). Spread the mask onto the lengths and ends of your hair (avoiding the scalp and roots).
3. Clip your hair onto the top of your head, cover with a shower cap, and heat – either using your hair dryer for 15 min or by sitting in the sun for 30-45 minutes (I love using this time to catch up on my reading, with a cup of tea).
4. When the mask has been on for at least 45 minutes in total (the longer, the better), remove the shower cap and rinse it out well in warm water. Shampoo your hair a couple of times if necessary, follow with your conditioner and leave to air dry if possible.

The result? Thicker and glossier hair! Hope you love it as much as I do.
